We are looking for a Consultant in Paediatric High Dependency and Transport to join our dynamic team. This unique position is split between Sheffield Children’s Hospital High Dependency Unit (HDU) and the Embrace transport service. You will help manage critical care transfers, offer expert clinical advice, and lead a high-performance transport team.
About You:
MBBS (or equivalent), MRCPCH (or equivalent higher qualification), and GMC registration.
On the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of obtaining CCT in Paediatrics.
Experience leading clinical teams and providing high-quality care in paediatric high dependency settings.
Expertise in complex clinical decision-making, including remote clinical advice and patient transport.

Main duties of the job
You will report to the Clinical Team Lead, and your responsibilities will include:
Lead clinical and managerial aspects of the Embrace transport service when on duty.
Facilitate urgent conference calls for patients requiring high-priority transfer.
Triage transport requests and determine appropriate team composition.
Ensure the management and transfer of critically ill patients, including providing consultant-level care when needed.
Support development of new team members, including supervised transports.
Contribute to audits, incident reporting, and service management.
Mentor medical and nursing staff within both Embrace and HDU settings.
Participate in critical care activities at Sheffield Children’s Hospital HDU.

Qualifications and Training
* • MRCPCH or equivalent higher qualification
* • Fully registered with the GMC
* • On Specialist Register, or within six months of obtaining CCT in Paediatrics
* • Higher academic qualification (eg. MD or PhD)
* • Delivers education and training to the multi-professional high dependency team
Experience
* • Experience in leading clinical teams to deliver high quality care in the in-patient setting
* • Experience in paediatric high dependency care
* • Ability to offer expert clinical opinions in complex clinical cases
* • Experience in assessing clinical situations and providing clinical advice on care remotely
* • Experience in patient transport
* • Experience in neonatology
Knowledge and Skills
* • Ability to prioritise and manage clinical workload
* • Basic experience in management, e.g., trainee rotas
* • Clear contribution to audit to effect change
* • Has interest in research and undertaken clinical projects
* • Ability to apply research and audit findings to clinical practice to improve patient outcomes
* • Teaching and training medical colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team
* • Experience in quality improvement projects
* • Ability to provide clinical and educational supervision to junior colleagues
* • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops
* • Recognises and assesses acutely unwell children and young people in the Emergency Department, paediatric ward and post-operative environment who require high dependency care
* • Leads the high dependency ward round
* • Recognises the need for escalation of care beyond that feasible in the high dependency environment and liaises with Anaesthetic, Paediatric Intensive Care and Transport colleagues to facilitate this
* • Establishes, maintains and troubleshoots the management of a child requiring non-invasive respiratory support and the tracheostomy ventilated child.
