This is a 12‑month clinical trust grade post in Leeds Teaching Hospitals, designed to provide comprehensive experience in all aspects of critical care medicine. The role is suitable for applicants wishing to develop their experience in Intensive Care Medicine, with the aim of progressing towards CESR or national training to become a fully trained consultant.
Main duties of the job
Manage all aspects of patient care in the critical care environment as part of a multidisciplinary team. The post will be tailored to the doctor’s needs, with a focus on progressing towards CESR. Additional training blocks can be arranged in neuro‑intensive, cardiac‑intensive, anaesthesia, paediatric ICU and acute medicine, depending on availability. An experienced Educational Supervisor will support the trainee’s educational journey, and a limited study budget will be available for suitable external training courses.

The critical care units are based in Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James University Hospital (SJUH). Together they provide over 80 critical care beds for adult and paediatric specialties, with plans for further expansion. Regional expertise extends to neurology, cardiothoracic, liver and transplant, thoracic, respiratory, renal, pancreatic, haematology, oncology and infectious diseases services.
Job responsibilities
Provide comprehensive critical care for general medical and surgical patients, as well as patients from regional specialist units. Responsibilities include:
* Day‑to‑day management of all aspects of patient care.
* Deliberate development of training opportunities in areas such as liver failure and transplant care, thoracic patient management, advanced airway and anaesthesia, teaching, research, and quality improvement.
* Participation in clinical audit, research, leadership and teaching activities.
* Contribution to mandatory teaching sessions, M&M meetings, critical incident reporting, and journal clubs.
* Flexibility to engage in theatre or other appropriate specialties when necessary.
Person Specification
Experience
* Basic Medical Qualification (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent)
* Full GMC Registration
* Experience in anaesthesia and/or critical care medicine or a suitable acute speciality
* Demonstrable high level of clinical experience and competence in critical care, including airway management and resuscitation
* Detailed employment history and evidence of career progression consistent with personal circumstances
* Communication skills: clear written and spoken communication, ability to adapt language, build rapport, and negotiate
* Awareness of managing medical/surgical conditions, including emergencies, and application of sound clinical judgement
* Proficiency in a range of medical procedures indicating manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination
* Capacity to work in multi‑professional teams, supervise junior staff and lead audit/quality improvement projects
Qualifications
* Full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
* Eligibility to work in the UK
* ALS, ATLS qualifications
* Primary FRCA or equivalent
