Job overview

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria.

The post holder will work as part of a team to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients, their relatives and carers.

To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.

To act as the designated deputy to the Ward Manager.

To teach and supervise junior and unqualified staff and maintain a learning environment.

To attend emergency stroke calls when carrying the stroke bleep

Please note that this role is a secondment opportunity. Before applying you must seek agreement and authorisation from your current line manager. Secondments can’t be agreed without your current manager’s approval. If you are unable to gain your managers approval you should refrain from applying unless you wish to take this role as a fixed term position.

Main duties of the job

1.1 Practices within the NMC code of conduct and has responsibility for promoting and monitoring this practice on the ward

1.2 Takes the lead role in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised evidence based patient care including the monitoring of care standards through audit and other activities

1.3 Participates in the development and implementation of an explicit ward philosophy of care

Effectively processes admissions & transfers and plans discharges in accordance with UHS policy and standards, including liaison with partner agencies

1.5 Actively participates and monitors the promotion of education for patients, their relatives and colleagues and ensures these needs are met within available resources

1.6 Ensures provision of all drugs as prescribed in accordance with UHS Policy, including parenteral administration.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

2.1 Co-ordinates the daily ward activity to enable the best use of human and other resources to meet patients’ needs and liaises with the Clinical Site Manager, Care Centre Manager and Senior Nurse to facilitate overall management of the medical unit

2.2 Effectively and professionally deals with emergency situations and debriefs staff where appropriate

2.3 Works with the Ward Manager to promote an effective learning environment on the ward

2.4 Assists the Ward Manager in continuous practice development of the ward and leads in designated areas

2.5 Supervises, teaches and acts as an appropriate role model and mentor for junior and unqualified staff and demonstrates the ability to communicate practical skills

2.6 Assists the Ward Manager in identifying training needs, through the use of the appraisal process, to professionally develop self and others. Participates in the Fgrade development programme

2.7 Assists in the recruitment, selection and retention of staff, including organizing and participating in orientation/adaptation programmes and signing bank and agency time sheets

2.8 In conjunction with the Ward Manager monitors sickness and absence in accordance with Trust policy

2.9 Adheres to local and National policies and guidelines

2.10 Ensures own safe practice and promotes the safe practice of others with regard to moving and handling, SHARPS, infection control etc

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria

1. 2 years experience as a band 5 nurse 1 years experience in Stroke
2. Thrombolysis and thrombectomy knowledge and experience
