Job Overview

Liverpool University Hospitals is offering a two‑year training opportunity to earn a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. Applicants must have at least four GCSEs at grade C (or above) in English Language, Maths, Science (core subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Combined Science) and another GCSE. Functional Skills English and Maths Level 2 are accepted. If you lack a core Science, an NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy and two years of experience as a pharmacy assistant may be considered equivalent.

Applicants must be available to start on 16/02/2026, with college enrolment before 23/02/2025. This Band 4 annex 21 training post pays 70% of the Band 4 pay scale in the first year and increases to 75% in the second year. Pay protection will be considered for current NHS employees.

This post is an apprenticeship and course fees are funded via the Apprenticeship Levy (public funds). Eligibility will be assessed at interview and prior to any offer. If you are not eligible for apprenticeship funding, your application may be withdrawn.

Applicants are applying for a position in one of our larger hospital sites (Aintree or Royal Liverpool) and your preferred location may not be guaranteed.


Main Duties of the Job

Liverpool University Hospitals will provide the support you need to obtain your professional qualification in which, once completed, you will be enabled to register as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Students must attend an online tutorial from Bradford College one day a week whilst the remainder of the working week will be on the job experience. Students must satisfy all requirements as instructed by academic staff, including all assignments, assessments and examinations to qualify as a registered pharmacy technician.


Detailed Job Description & Main Responsibilities

* Prepare and assemble all pharmaceuticals, including extemporaneously prepared products, according to prevailing policies and procedures.
* Participate fully in training through rotations within the department.
* Carry out all duties required within each section to complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

Safeguarding, DBS and Visa

Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing the successful applicant/s DBS application be recovered via salary deduction following start in post. The amount of £23 (standard disclosure) or £43 (enhanced disclosure) will be deducted from salary in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment. Bank posts require upfront payment. DBS applications submitted from 2nd December will be subject to the new DBS fee of £26.50 (standard) and £54.50 (enhanced). From April 2017, skilled visa applicants and their adult dependants must provide a criminal record certificate from each country they have lived in consecutively for 12 months or more in the past ten years. Applicants requiring sponsorship may wish to determine the likelihood of obtaining sponsorship for this position by assessing themselves against the criteria on the gov.uk website – https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa.
