About the Role
Be part of this ‘once in a generation’ project that will deliver clean energy to 6 million homes for the next 60 years. Sizewell C will create a 3.2 GW nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast to provide reliable load‑low‑carbon electricity.
The Civil Works Alliance is an extended delivery enterprise involving Sizewell C and three international construction companies: Balfour Beatty, Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke. We bring together a single delivery organisation with years of learning and experience from other major complex infrastructure programmes worldwide.
What you’ll be doing
* Lead a team of HSW professionals providing support and guidance to the operational teams to deliver and comply with the project and CWA HSW goals and objectives throughout the pre‑construction, construction and post‑construction process, ensuring all legal obligations are met.
* Provide a high level of support to the operational teams to enable the safe delivery of work.
* Work closely with the HSW Director providing tactical support and HSW data and feedback from the work stream.
* Communicate and implement the HSW strategy.
* Build solid relationships with stakeholders and deliver on customer strategic and tactical requirements.
* Lead and manage the HSW team including supporting the PDR process.
* Work with HR on developing resources including recruitment and interview.
* Undertake health and safety compliance evaluations, tours and audits as required and ensure sufficient assurance of project activities.
* Identify and rank risk associated with CWA work activities.
* Prepare fact‑driven reports following inspections, tours, audits and investigations.
* Support the implementation of and ensure compliance with Sizewell C (SZC) project standards and the CWA Safety Management System (SMS).
* Build relationships with the CWA project teams and wider interested stakeholders.
* Support the HSW team during work planning to evaluate and address potential risks.
* Be trained to CWA standard for investigating incidents (Principal Incident Investigator HFAC’s training).
* Respond to, co‑ordinate and support emerging events effectively.
* Lead or support investigation of events by the project and HSW teams.
* Work closely with operational teams to coordinate and share relevant information required to compile appropriate reports when an event has occurred.
* Plan and undertake witness accounts/ statements.
* Feed information into the Project and Parent Company Reporting Systems.
* Understand the CWA and Project Event Reporting procedural requirements.
* Communicate lessons learned from monitoring, events and/or from Alliance parent companies to project teams.
* Support or deliver training and advisory sessions to operational teams and Tier 2 contractors (e.g. Setting to Work, Fact Finders, Occupational Health and CWA SMS familiarisation).
* Review and update relevant project HSW documentation.
* Assist operational teams to deliver Zero Harm and the Zero Harm Events Calendar.
* Promote the use of the project and CWA reporting tools ensuring actions are taken and feedback is delivered.
* Communicate and promote a positive health & safety culture.
* Undertake reviews of relevant safety documentation (e.g. work package plans / task briefings).
* Liaise with regulators (ONR) and develop proactive relationships.
* Motivate, coach and support the CWA Project Management teams to deliver HSW project requirements.
* Implement the nuclear safety message during engagements with the whole CWA team.
Essential
* Experience leading and managing teams.
* Detailed technical knowledge and experience of health and safety legislation, regulations and guidance.
* Experience working on major infrastructure projects.
* Prior experience providing leadership and support to operational and functional teams at a senior level.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to influence and promote a positive HSW culture, providing constructive feedback.
* Engage at all levels within the CWA operational team structure.
* High competence in accident and incident investigation.
* Use data and information for preparation of HSW reports.
* Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Manager competence.

Qualifications & Experience
* Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (or working towards).
* NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 6 qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
