Description
The Costs Draftsperson is responsible for preparing bills, schedules of costs, and other pleadings, primarily focusing on resolving costs claims as a receiving party representative.
Key Accountabilities
1. Draft bills of costs and recover costs through the Detailed Assessment process, including negotiating costs, drafting budgets for Claimant and/or Defendant, and conducting own advocacy.
2. Manage own caseload using the in-house case management system, ensuring timely and accurate record maintenance, billing, and management information to support business decisions.
3. Achieve daily chargeable hours targets.
4. Delegate tasks appropriately to team members where suitable.
5. Draft Bills and Schedules of Costs.
6. Prepare replies, consider points of dispute, identify strengths and weaknesses, and document accordingly.
7. Develop cost strategy reports and provide strategic costs advice.
8. Handle correspondence and telephone calls.
9. Conduct periodic reviews of files in line with client requirements.
10. Provide clients with written updates via email or letter regarding case activity to ensure they receive current and accurate information.
11. Conduct own advocacy or instruct an advocate as required.
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
* Experience in a similar costs Draftsperson role, including bill drafting and costs recovery for the receiving party.
* Good understanding of the Detailed Assessment process, relevant case law, and insurance litigation practices.
* Previous experience liaising with clients.
* Minimum education: 3 GCSEs grade C or above, including Maths, English, and Science.
* Strong telephone negotiation skills.
* Experience managing own caseload.
* Ability to use initiative, plan, and prioritize workloads.
* Excellent listening and verbal communication skills.
* Decision-making ability.
* Calmness under pressure.
* Teamwork skills.
* Proficient IT skills.
Desirable:
* Degree and/or LPC and/or ALCD or equivalent qualification.
* Experience conducting own advocacy.
