Details of Organisation/Business Directorate The Director People & Training (Dir P&T) is responsible for attracting, training, sustaining and retaining inspired, capable and motivated people in an agile and flexible Whole Force to enable the Royal Navy to succeed on operations by putting our people capability first. Additionally, as the Naval Secretary they are responsible for advising the First Sea Lord & Chief of Naval Staff on all matters relating to Flag and General Officers’ appointing. They are supported in the fulfilment of these specific NAVSEC duties by the Naval Assistant. Dir P&T is additionally responsible for all activities undertaken at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), Command Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM), HMS RALEIGH, HMS COLLINGWOOD, the Institute of Naval Medicine, HMS TEMERIARE, and the Training Management Group (TMG) where the majority of individual Naval training is conducted including Phases 1, 2 and 3, as well as hosting a number of lodger Units at these sites. Dir P&T is also the Operating Duty Holder (ODH) for all Royal Marines Training undertaken at CTCRM and all Diving Training undertaken at the Defence Diving School at Horsea Island. They are supported in this Role by the Delivery Duty Holders for each of these activities, and by SO1 Ops, the Directorate Environmental & Safety Officer, and Senior Operators for each activity. The People & Training (P&T) Engagement Team works to cohere, understand and shape all key messaging, priorities and change activity across the P&T Directorate. The team collaborates closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to translate complex policy, people and training developments into clear, consistent and meaningful messages that our people can understand and engage with. The team ensures that P&T comms are aligned, prioritised and delivered coherently through RN Comms, using the most effective mix of face‑to‑face engagement, events, digital platforms and internal and external channels. In doing so, the team helps ensure that P&T priorities and changes are communicated effectively across the Royal Navy, supporting delivery and reinforcing our commitment to truly Place Our People Capability First. The Engagement Team leads on the planning and delivery of events and front‑line engagement activity, taking people messages directly to our workforce and, where possible, capturing feedback to inform and improve engagement and the lived experience of serving in the Navy. Job Purpose - background and context The Engagement Practitioner plays a pivotal role in bringing the Royal Navy’s People & Training (P&T) story to life. Working at the heart of the P&T directorate, the role focuses on cohering key messages, initiatives and change programmes into compelling, consistent engagement that resonates across the whole Royal Navy. The post holder will translate complex people and training activity into clear, engaging communications, ensuring that P&T priorities are understood, relevant and accessible to all audiences. This will be achieved through a blended approach to engagement, including face‑to‑face communications, internal and external channels, digital platforms and targeted campaigns, selecting the most effective methods to reach and connect with our people. As part of a collaborative engagement team, the Engagement Practitioner will help design, develop and deliver communication and engagement plans for P&T activity. They will work closely with stakeholders across the Directorate and the wider Navy, funnelling agreed messaging through Royal Navy Communications via the Engagement Planner and supporting the coherent delivery of campaigns and outputs. The team also delivers a programme of events throughout the year that directly support and celebrate our people, making this an exciting opportunity to shape how the Royal Navy listens to, informs and engages its workforce. Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and the ability to build trusted relationships are essential, alongside excellent organisational skills and an eye for detail. The Royal Navy has adopted Agile methodology, meaning that all members of the P&T Engagement Team contribute flexibly to Agile sprints as required, supporting priority work and responding dynamically to emerging needs. The Engagement Team uses Agile Scrum methodology to move through sprints.
