Rate of Pay : £30.78 - £40.63 per hour Summary: As a Principal Planning Officer, you will serve as the lead planning officer for a defined area of the Borough. Reporting to the Area Team Manager or Strategic Applications Manager, you will ensure a coordinated approach to development and regeneration while directly managing a small team of professional planners and technical staff. You will act as a technical expert on major, complex applications and provide high-level guidance to strategic decision-makers to help Lambeth achieve its performance targets and corporate outcomes Responsibilities: Independently lead on major and complex planning applications, Planning Performance Agreements (PPAs), and council-led projects. Supervise a team of Senior Planners, Planners, Graduates, and Technical Support Officers. This includes managing appraisals, identifying training needs, and ensuring casework is handled within target times Prepare and present expert evidence at public inquiries, informal hearings, and in court. Provide final clearance for delegated and committee reports. Act on behalf of the Area Team Manager or Assistant Director of Development Management as required Qualifications: An RTPI-recognised degree-level qualification in Town Planning or an equivalent field Candidates should be eligible for Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). Essentials : Extensive experience in development management, specifically handling a caseload of major and/or complex planning applications. Experience providing professional advice to Councillors and senior officers, with an awareness of political sensitivities in dealing with contentious information. A thorough understanding of planning legislation, procedures, and current issues affecting urban regeneration in London. Please note: You should be available to work immediately or at a short notice.
