Senior Firmware (FPGA) Engineer – Role Overview
Join Thales as a Senior Firmware (FPGA) Engineer based at Manor Royal site in Crawley, UK. The role involves designing, developing and verifying firmware for defence and aerospace platforms, working closely with systems, software and hardware teams.
Responsibilities
* Work as part of firmware teams to deliver projects on time, within cost and quality targets.
* Design firmware using Hardware Description Languages (VHDL, Verilog, System Verilog).
* Verify firmware using Hardware Verification Languages and construct test benches.
* Enhance firmware‑related processes through documentation, scripting and automation.
* Collaborate closely with multi‑disciplinary teams and external customers.
Qualifications
* BEng/MEng/EngD/PhD in electronics or related field and 5+ years of firmware engineering experience.
* Experience in defence, transportation and/or aerospace domains; interfacing with external customers.
* Membership or fellowship of a professional engineering body, preferably with chartered status.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Desired Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience
* Leading firmware design and architecture.
* Leading small firmware teams.
* Verification test bench architecture with System Verilog or C++.
* Advanced VHDL verification (OSVVM/UVVM).
* Requirements management (IBM Rational DOORS).
* Simulation tools (Mentor Graphics Modelsim, Questasim).
* Digital hardware design (VHDL, Verilog, System Verilog; PCIe, Ethernet, AXI4).
* Object‑oriented design techniques.
* Image processing and algorithm development (MATLAB).
* Linux development environments.
* Creation of firmware development plans and design documentation.
Security Clearance
This role requires a UK National with Security Clearance (SC) without caveats. Candidates must achieve and maintain SC clearance before commencing employment. Dual nationals from Non‑ITAR countries may be considered with MOD approval.
