Job overview
The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to women centred care.
The role includes working within local and national guidelines that enables individuals to provide safe and excellent care to our service users. There will be training and development opportunities for post holders who wish to progress within this career.
You will proactively, consistently and meaningfully demonstrate the Trust values in their day to day interactions with colleagues and service users.
You will be recruited at Band 2 if you have not yet completed CUH HCSW induction which includes completion of the Care Certificate and Competencies. Once completed you will move up to Band 3. If you are currently working in a support worker role and have therefore completed these, you will be recruited as Band 3
The process for functional skills has now changed, this is conducted as a second interview on TRAC following any applicant that is successful at their initial interview. This is organised by recruitment and you must achieve a pass rate of at least 50% to receive a conditional offer. This process applies to anyone that is not currently working as a Support Worker at CUH.
Main duties of the job
The MSW will work alongside Midwives and other health professionals in the provision of safe and excellent care to women and their babies. The MSW will receive relevant training and once deemed competent to do so, will have an array of skills to support midwives, some of the skills are listed below:
Ensuring the clinical areas are stocked, clean and ready for use, ensuring equipment is safe and PAT tested, clinical observations of mother and baby, venepuncture and cannulation, feeding support including breast and bottle, diabetes care, promotion of health education, emergency care including new born life support among many other skills/duties.
The MSW will work on a rotational basis gaining clinical competence around the maternity unit enabling them to become multi skilled and high functioning MSWs.
There is an opportunity to undertake the MSW apprenticeship through Dynamic.

Person specification
Qualifications
* GCSE or equivalent in health related subject (Grade 4 or above)
* Literacy and Numeracy (level 2) or equivalent e.g. Maths/English GCSE grade 4 or above/willing to work towards and achieve within 6 months of commencing the Band 3 role
* Care certificate or commitment to complete this upon employment
* Level 3 Diploma, B-tech in health and social care or equivalent in a health related subject
Experience
* Previous experience working with members of the public in a health related setting
* Experience of working with families and or children
* Previous experience in a maternity setting and aware of the principles of woman and family centred care
* Previous NHS experience
* Understand NHS/Social care systems
Knowledge
* Understands the importance of the 6Cs and the NHS Constitution
* Understands clinical risks regarding Infection Control
* Recognise the extent and limitations of own and others competence
* Use own initiative, recognising when to escalate concerns to a senior member of staff
* Understands the importance of consistently providing individualised care based on current research and evidence
* Demonstrate awareness of the needs of area specific patient group
