Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency Standards & Engineering Team
Join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. You will play a key role in shaping how we deliver reliable and sustainable electrical service across high, medium, low, and extra‑low voltage systems, including control and SCADA/telemetry platforms.
Job Description
You will work within the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate to provide technical leadership and support the whole organisation in achieving safe, reliable and sustainable assets. Your responsibilities will include influencing future service delivery, developing electrical engineering standards, ensuring compliance with safety rules, and maintaining competency guides for employees involved in electrical work.
Responsibilities
* Provide technical engineering leadership across the organisation.
* Develop, deliver and maintain electrical engineering standards, including safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems in assets such as pumping stations, water management structures and flood defence sites.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for employees working on electrical systems.
* Hold a national incident response role, including on‑call duties outside normal working hours.
* Support the organisation’s net‑zero carbon commitments through reliable and sustainable asset management.
Qualifications
* Experience in high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment.
* Knowledge of the Electricity at Work Regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Experience in control systems design, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Understanding of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Experience in testing, isolation and proving dead of HV and LV electrical systems.
* Knowledge of risk‑based maintenance approaches, including failure mode effect analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Experience in drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council (or evidence of working toward registration).
* UK driving licence.
Employment Details
This is a hybrid role with a base location near your home. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. An incident management objective will be part of your development plan.
