They work alongside an established team of Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, both experienced and those still in training. Two consultants are present during day time hours and one out of hours. Previous advanced airway management is a pre-requisite of the post. Duties involve assessment and stabilisation of critically ill patients with safe transfer to Critical Care and then continuing care and management. The middle grades carry the adult and paediatric cardiac arrest and trauma bleeps. This post offers an excellent opportunity to consolidate and develop new skills in managing patients with critical illness. We provide a supportive training environment and numerous educational opportunities. About us We are offering an opportunity to gain General Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) experience in a state-of-the-art adult critical care unit based at Queen Alexandra (QA) Hospital, Portsmouth, England. The appointment is due to start as soon as possible in a timeline agreed by both parties. The post would suit candidates who are currently between rotations (e.g. completed ACCS or core anaesthetic training), or who are seeking further ICM experience, or before taking up a Consultant post. Portsmouth ICU is recognised for all stages of training in ICM by the Faculty of ICM, and has C12 CICM (Australasian) accreditation. Previous critical care/advanced airway skills are essential. There are plenty of opportunities for career development in interest areas (echocardiography, research, simulation, quality improvement and education particularly). Our supportive and enthusiastic consultants come from a range of training backgrounds including Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Acute Medicine, Renal and single speciality ICM training. The Department has a strong reputation for training and was rated as outstanding by the CQC in 2018 & 2022. The post is for 12 - 24 months. A rota pattern of work and annual and study leave entitlement has been designed in accordance with the new junior doctors contract. The rota has been designed to ensure the very best educational opportunities and hopefully regarded positively in terms of work-life balance. Job responsibilities The Department considers Intensive Care Medicine to be an identifiable branch of acute medicine. The unit is staffed on a 24-hour basis by doctors in training with close supervision and support from the ICU Consultant. Clinical control of the Intensive Care Unit lies with the Intensive Care Consultants, all of whom have specific training in Intensive Care. The Department has training links with Intensive Therapy Centres in Australia and Canada with individuals who have conducted training periods in both countries.
