Responsibilities
* A Principal shall be required to carry out professional duties in accordance with the school’s policy and objectives as determined by the employing authority and, in the case of a controlled school, the Board of Governors; obey reasonable directions of the employing authority and, in the case of a controlled school, the Board of Governors.
* Be responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school, subject to policy and consultation with the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
* Consult with the employing authority, school staff and, in the case of a controlled school, the Board of Governors as appropriate.
Professional Duties In addition to the role of a teaching Principal, the professional duties include:
* Formulating the overall aims and objectives of the school and policies for their implementation.
* Participating in the selection and appointment of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school.
* Deploying and managing all teaching and non-teaching staff, delegating duties where appropriate, maintaining a reasonable balance for each employee, and sharing equitably the duty of providing cover for absent teachers.
* Maintaining relationships with organisations representing staff and with relevant bodies.
* Determining, organising and implementing an appropriate curriculum for the school, considering pupil needs and resources.
* Reviewing the work and organisation of the school; evaluating standards of teaching and learning; ensuring professional performance standards are established and maintained.
* Providing information about staff work and performance where relevant to future employment.
* Participating in staff development and performance review; ensuring access to appropriate training for all staff.
* Ensuring pupil progress is monitored and recorded; determining and implementing a policy for pastoral care.
* Promoting pupil self-discipline, good behaviour, and appropriate conduct; managing school discipline in line with policy.
* Arranging for regular information to parents about the curriculum and pupil progress; promoting engagement with the school community.
* Maintaining effective relationships with external bodies; liaising with the employing authority; reporting to Governors; ensuring security and supervision of school buildings and grounds; reporting maintenance needs as required.
* Participating in staff development and performance review; identifying areas for further training and development.
* Planning for Vice-Principal/Deputy leadership coverage during absences; participating in teaching where appropriate; ensuring a break policy is observed; participating in PRSD for Principals.
Management Of Staff The duties include delegation considerations and ensuring teachers receive information needed to carry out duties effectively.
* Consider delegation of duties to a Vice-Principal and communicate essential information to staff.
Training and Development of Staff
* Ensure newly-qualified teachers and those returning from a break have access to adequate support in their first years of service or resumed service, in line with EA arrangements.

* Managing the Organisation Prioritise and plan; think creatively; make informed decisions; establish structures; develop and implement the School Development Plan; delegate and monitor; manage human, physical and financial resources.
* Ensuring Accountability Create a culture of accountability among Governors and staff; integrate self-evaluation and external evaluations to improve the school; monitor and evaluate school outcomes and policies; report to Governors; disseminate good practice.
