About the Role
As Head of Engineering, you will oversee the engineering operations across multiple production sites in the UK. You will manage a variety of production processes, oversee capital projects, and implement / maintain a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). The Head of Engineering is also responsible for developing and delivering training programs to enhance the skills of the engineering team, driving Lean initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce waste, and plays an active role in the company’s decarbonisation journey. This role requires frequent travel between sites across the UK (with some of the direct reports being based at our Centre of Excellence at our Sandtoft site in Doncaster, so the post holder is required to hold a full UK Driving License to be considered for this role).
Duties also include:
* Providing strategic leadership and direction to the engineering teams across multiple sites
* Fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence
* Being a safety champion, leading with behaviours and cultural Safety
* Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
* Oversee and optimize production processes to ensure efficiency and quality
* Implement best practices and innovative solutions to improve production performance (including digitalisation)
* Condition monitoring and enhanced predictive maintenance
* Drive Lean initiatives to eliminate waste, improve process flow, and enhance productivity
* Plan, manage, and execute capital projects to enhance production capabilities and infrastructure
* Implement and maintain a robust CMMS to manage maintenance activities and asset performance
* Develop CMMS to ensure standardisation and consistent quality of maintenance activities
* Further integrate our systems to maximise the effectiveness of the maintenance teams
* Develop and implement maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and extend equipment life
* Develop longer term plans for all sites (layouts, capability etc) in line our commercial aspirations
* Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of the engineering team
* Ensure the team keeps pace with technological advances and industry best practices
* Increase focus on health and safety (H&S) training, including the management of Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)
* Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development
* Coach and mentor the broader Operations team
* Lead the implementation of Lean principles and practices across all sites
* Conduct Lean training and workshops to build internal capabilities
* Monitor and report on Lean initiatives and their impact on operational performance, including the development of the Wienerberger Maintenance Standard.
* Play an active role in the company’s decarbonisation journey
* Develop and implement strategies to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency
* Collaborate with other departments to integrate sustainable practices into engineering operations
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm
About You
You will have/be:
* Strategic thinking and planning
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* The ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
* Proficient in using CMMS and other relevant software
* Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence
* Expertise in Lean principles and practices
* A sound understanding of decarbonisation strategies and sustainable practices
* Proficient in electrical systems and heavy engineering
* Strong network of contacts and suppliers
You will also have:
* Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field
* Extensive experience in engineering management, preferably in a multi-site environment
* Proven track record of managing capital projects and implementing CMMS
* Strong leadership and team management skills
* Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities
* Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations
* Experience with Lean methodologies and tools. Ideally Six Sigma qualified (Black Belt)
* Heavy engineering experience
* Good working knowledge of electrical systems
* Continuous Improvement (CI) experience, particularly in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
* Experience working in the ceramics industry
* International experience preferable
* Ideally NEBOSH qualified
* CAD trained (preferable but not essential)
