We are North Bristol NHS Trust; the largest Trust in the South West region and the Major Trauma Centre for the Severn Network. We have University Teaching Status and are associated with both the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

We are looking for Clinical Fellows to join us across a range of specialties, includingCare of the Elderly,AcuteMedicine,Generaland RespiratoryMedicine,Stroke, Neurologyand Emergency Medicine. We will endeavour to give you placements in your preferred specialties.

Roles are availableto startfrom December 2025. Posts will be more a minimum of 8 months with a possibility for extension.Excellent candidates may be able to extend their positions. The posts have reasonable on-call commitments which vary according to speciality.

Although the posts are not part of the training rotations, we are able to offer similar opportunities, including leave and financial support for study opportunities on the recommendation of your supervisor. We actively encourage post holders to participate in teaching, QI projects and to become part of the specialty teams.

We offer opportunities for flexible contracts, as desired, with a minimum commitment of 8 months. 20% professional development time is available for those with contracts of 6 months or more. There are some individual posts that are 100% clinical.

Candidates must have GMC Registration that allows them to work in posts that are not recognised for training. It is desirable that candidates have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent.

The Division of Medicine includes the Emergency Department and has 418 beds in the state of the art hospital. Specialty focused wards cover Cardiology, Coronary Care, Respiratory, Infectious Diseases and HIV, Care of the Elderly and Gastroenterology.

The Department of Medicine operates an active postgraduate programme with weekly journal clubs and clinical governance meetings. All the professionals allied to the Department are involved in postgraduate meetings.

The Neurology and Stroke departments sit within the state-of-the-art Regional Neurosciences Centre including Neurosurgery, dedicated Neuropathology, Neuroradiology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuropsychiatry, and Neuropsychology. Since May 2023, the Stroke department at Southmead Hospital takes all acute stroke presentations for the entire population of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, along with regional provision of 24/7 Mechanical Thrombectomy to the wider Severn Region and beyond.

Information technology is well advanced in the Trust. Terminals on the wards, offices and clinics enable direct access to laboratory results, e-mail and Medline. NHSnet and Internet access is available.

The post holder is managerially accountable to the Clinical Directors of the Medicine Directorate, Dr Ella Chaudhuri and Dr Jarrod Richards.

The Divisional Operations Director is Ben Hewlett.


Title:Clinical Fellow (ST1/2) Medical Rotation

Employer:North Bristol NHS Trust

Duration:Fixed term post Available for up to 8 months to finish in August 2026. May be possibility for extension or reapplication.

Base Hospital:All posts are regarded as being Trust wide, but the base hospital will be Southmead Hospital.

Please note that the base could change as a consequence of clinical requirements.

Educational Approval: The post has neither Royal College nor Postgraduate approval for training. The post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining clinical experience in the specialties covered.

Learning Objectives/Specialist Interests

The post comprises approximately 80% of direct clinical time working in medical and/or neurosciences specialties on rotation. The remaining 20% (approx. 2 half days or 1 whole day per week) will be protected for either the development of specialty clinical interests or areas of expertise in support of clinical practice. This is once clear achievable objectives have been established.

These could include:

· Quality Improvement and Audit

· Development of specialty interest

· Teaching & Education including Simulation training

· Clinical Leadership

· Research

Clinical Experience

This is a non-training post but the Clinical Fellows will get wide ranging clinical experience, supervised by consultant medical staff.

All rotations are planned to give a variety of acute and specialty work. They consist of rotations of 4 month durations in various specialties across the division of medicine and in stroke and neurology. These may include: Acute Medicine, Care of the Elderly (acute and step down), General and Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Neurology or Stroke medicine.

Teaching

You will not be expected to take on any formal teaching responsibility. In most of these posts you will be working with Foundation Year doctors so will be supporting them clinically. Help with informal teaching of ward based medical students is encouraged. If you have a particular interest in teaching, we will support you within the constraints of your timetable.

Courses/Training/Journal/Clubs/Lunchtime meetings

There is a 2-hour teaching session once a week for the Internal Medicine trainee doctors to cover topics from their curriculum. You will be able to attend these teaching sessions if you wish as part of your 20% development time.

There is also speciality ward based teaching which you are welcome to attend.

There are weekly Journal Clubs and departmental meetings. Clinical Fellows will be able to attend these meetings.

You will have a study leave allowance (10 days per year pro-rata, allowing for service needs) and a small study leave budget. You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor.

Annual Leave

You will be entitled to 5 weeks and 2 days annual leave per year pro rata if on point 0-2 of the salary scale or 6 weeks and 2 days annual leave pro rata if on point 03 and above.
