Locum Consultant in Paediatric Nephrology
Thisis an exciting opportunity to join our Paediatric Nephrology department for 6months but with the opportunity for this to be extended to cover the wholematernity period.
TheLeeds Paediatric Renal service provides regional specialist kidney care forchildren across East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, and theHumber. This service is one of 13 designated services for paediatric nephrologyin the UK and one of 10 providing a fully comprehensive service includingtransplantation. The services at Leeds Childrens Hospital are based in therenal unit, inpatient bed base on L50 and adjacent haemodialysis unit. This isa shared ward with paediatric hepatology and includes a shared 13 bed baseincluding 8 cubicles (2 with the capacity for haemodialysis). Patients are alsoroutinely care of cared for on the High Dependency unit and in Paediatricintensive care post renal transplant. Children will need to come to Leeds forspecialised treatments or procedures which include renal transplantation, acutekidney injury requiring dialysis, insertion of long-term dialysis access andproblems relating to long-term dialysis, renal biopsy, specialist imaging,renovascular angiography and treatment and children with complexnephro-urological conditions. This is inaddition to the large cohort of children with chronic kidney disease requirethe input of a large multi-disciplinary team
Main duties of the job
Thereis an established regional network that includes educational activitiesincluding the annual regional network study day to provide educational updatesand training educational study day and provision of regional guidelinesalongside a network of outreach clinics at 11 other hospitals across theregion. Thus, providing shared care for patients and in-line with the principleof providing equity of access to quality care as close to home as possible fora population of children with complex and/or chronic disease (NHS KidneyCare-supported Improving the standard of care of children with kidney diseasethrough paediatric nephrology networks, RCPCH 2011).
Thereare a number of specialised clinics including antenatal counselling, regionalstone service, Tuberosclerosis clinics & joint rheumatology clinics. Aswell as specialist renal services, the department also provides secondaryreferral care for a large range of paediatric nephrology referrals includingurinary tract infection, haematuria, proteinuria & problems withincontinence.
InLeeds the paediatric renal service outpatient clinics are based withinChildrens outpatients in Martin Wing on Leeds General Infirmary site with adedicated paediatric play support & phlebotomy service. There are weeklytransplant, general nephrology & chronic kidney disease clinics. Inaddition, there outreach joint clinics across Yorkshire & the Humber.

Thisis a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist
Thispost will deliver 10PAs supporting the Paediatric Nephrology team (Dr PallaviYadav, Dr Joseph McAllister, Dr Hitesh Prajapati, Dr Amanda Newnham & DrKay Tyerman).
Thepost will be based at Leeds General Infirmary.

Haemodialysis
Thehaemodialysis unit is co-located with the renal inpatient ward (L50). This is adesignated 5 station unit, including an isolation cubicle with a separateentrance for family and patients. Haemodialysis (haemodialysis andhaemodiafiltration) is delivered in centre with routine haemodialysis deliveredMonday to Saturday (6-day service) with a 7 day/week daytime urgent dialysiscover. The number of children receiving dialysis ranges from 8-12. Leeds is oneof the KQuIP (Kidney Quality Improvement project) establishing homehaemodialysis and as part of this there is a haemodialysis nursing staffexpansion programme including rotational nursing staff from the ward and annurse educator role.
Thereis an established peritoneal dialysis programme with patient numbers rangingfrom 4-10. There is urology surgical support for catheter insertion for acuteand chronic peritoneal dialysis. There is a training package for carers led bythe specialist nursing team with a combination of in hospital and at hometraining. There is ongoing support from the specialist nursing team at homewith electronic access to each dialysis session. There is monthly outpatientreview of all patients receiving peritoneal dialysis in our MDT clinic.
Transplantation
Thereis an active transplantation programme in Leeds with an average of 10transplants per year, with a current cohort of 65 transplant patients underfollow up. There is specialist nursingsupport for transplant work up and a comprehensive MDT transplant listingprogramme involving nephrologist, transplant surgeons, immunologicallaboratory, specialist nurses, psychology and social workers. The transplantprogramme is supported by the transplant surgical team Mr Masood, MsMartinez-Lopez and Mr Falconer.
Nephro-Urology
Thereare close links with the paediatric urology MDT. There is a monthlynephro-urology MDT to discuss complex cases and a monthly joint nephro-urologyclinic. There is access to non-invasive and invasive urodynamics and anevolving medical bladders service.
Thereare a number of specialised clinics including antenatal counselling, regionalstone service, Tuberosclerosis clinics and joint rheumatology clinics. As wellas specialist renal services, the department also provides secondary referralcare for a large range of paediatric nephrology referrals including urinarytract infection, haematuria, proteinuria and problems with incontinence

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver care to patients with tertiarylevel nephrotic issues at the LGI.
Supervision of patients
Care of in-patients on a on call rota. (1:6) Paediatric Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation.
Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings
2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the CSU and across the Hospital.
2.3 To work with colleagues in PaediatricNephrology to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 6) for 12 months. Thisincludes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normalworking hours.
2.4 To contribute to research, teaching, andnew developments within the Paediatric Nephrology team. The post holder will beencouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical researchprograms on going in the department.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MB BS (or equivalent)
* Membership examination of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Children (RCPCH) or equivalent qualification
* Higher degree e.g. MD/PHD relevant to the subspecialty
Additional Requirements
* Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK
Experience
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in paediatric nephrology
* Specifically he/she must demonstrate higher training in Paediatric Nephrology
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
* Eligibility to work in the UK
* Is up to date and fit to practice safely
* Should have completed a recognised training programme in paediatric nephrology
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues demonstrated by one of the following
* Passing a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider
* Having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18
* Having a degree-level academic qualification that was taught in English - if you studied abroad, youll need to apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) for confirmation
