Director of Nursing

The Director of Nursing will be a senior member of the Directorate leadership team and will be expected to lead nursing and associated clinical professional groups to deliver excellent safe and quality driven care that results in an excellent patient and family experience, ensuring that they are treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

The postholder will also contribute to the achievement of operational performance objectives and financial efficiency. They will provide effective and proactive nursing leadership and will be expected to demonstrate continuous improvement and innovation associated with the Trust Strategy and the Nursing Strategy. They will be accountable for the deployment and retention of nurses and wider clinical support staff and will be expected to lead on modernising the clinical workforce to demonstrate effective use of resource and financial efficiency. The Director of Nursing will be expected to lead on projects outside of Nursing both within the Trust and externally.

This post is professionally accountable to the Chief Nurse.


Main duties of the job

Key performance metrics:

· Accountable for the leadership performance of the Associate Chief Nurse

· Lead on and have oversight of the quality assurance metrics that encompass Clinical Governance and will have accountability for quality assessments and improvement activities associated with quality, safety and patient experience.

· Accountable for the nursing standards of the clinical care delivery and will be responsible for remedial actions and performance if standards fall short of expected metrics.

· Develop nursing policy that complies with legislative governance and Nursing and Midwifery Regulations.

· Accountable for the effective management of Trust resources and ensures that all nursing teams work within the budget Standing Financial Instructions.

· Accountable for the appropriate use of finance, ensuring that teams remain within budget and take appropriate action to rectify any overspend.

· Work collaboratively with the Chief of Service and the Director of Operations in ensuring that operational performance metrics ( Activity and Performance) meet national standards.

· Be responsible for the effective employment and retention of nurses and support staff and take accountability for staffing gaps and the appropriate use of temporary staffing use and expenditure.

· Lead on the review

· Develop and implement a Directorate workforce plan for nursing, working closely with other clinical teams

· Take the lead role on a range of directorate/ corporate projects as requested.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training


Essential criteria

* Registered Nurse with current professional body registration (experience in caring for Children and Young People)
* Relevant First Degree
* Master’s level qualification
* Evidence of recent personal and professional development pertaining to leadership


Desirable criteria

* Coaching or mentoring qualification

Experience/Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Significant leadership at a senior level within the NHS and across a range of NHS settings
* Significant experience of leading and managing clinical teams
* Significant experience of modernising and redesigning a clinical workforce
* Demonstratable experience of building, maintaining and utilising successful relationships with all staff in a complex environment
* Proven experience of successful recruitment and retention initiatives
* Significant experience of operational leadership in either an acute or specialist Trust
* Evidence of successfully leading significant organisational change in developing new models of healthcare delivery
* Evidence of significant experience in leading on quality, safety and patient experience initiatives
* Demonstrable experience of working with patients and families in difficult situations
* Considerable experience in managing complex safeguarding situations.
* Proven experience of budget management
* Experience of training and development implementing evidence-based practice or nursing research in practice
* Substantial experience in managing complex employment situations
