How you'll make a difference
As a Traffic Engineer Technician, you will play a key role in delivering effective engineering solutions that support high-quality traffic schemes across South Gloucestershire. You will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, including pedestrian and cycle route improvements, traffic calming measures, speed limit reviews, crossings and waiting retractions.
With the support of colleagues on our Place Engineering team, you will contribute to the delivery of schemes from initial design concept through to construction and completion, gaining valuable experience across the full project lifecycle.
What you will be doing
* You will design and consult on a range of traffic schemes, working closely with in-house teams throughout the design process, including street lighting, structures, traffic signals, drainage and road safety.
* It will be your responsibility to prepare construction documentation, including all relevant health and safety information in line with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM), for works delivered by our in-house contractor.
* Carrying out consultation activities, you will liaise with members of the public, councillors, parish councils and legal teams to progress and advertise traffic orders. You will also prepare detailed objection reports for consideration by the Director of Environment and Community Services.
* Working collaboratively with fellow engineers, you will also support the wider team by delegating tasks to junior staff where appropriate, contributing to the successful delivery of projects and team objectives.
What we need from you
* We require you to hold an A-level or level 3 equivalent qualification in an engineering or technical discipline and be able to demonstrate relevant work‑related experience.
* It is essential that you have a sound understanding of the legal requirements relating to traffic regulation and management in England. This may include knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions and the Traffic Signs Manual, along with experience of providing design input during the construction phase.
* You will have a good working knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM).
* A strong customer‑focused approach is key, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You will also have experience of delegating tasks and supporting junior staff.
* Due to the nature of this role, you will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of writing and presenting information to a variety of audiences, including senior management and councillors.
* You will be able to clearly articulate concepts, conclusions and recommendations, demonstrating strong attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, high‑quality work.

* The nature of the duties of this role will require you to travel therefore, you must have a full, current valid driving licence and access to a vehicle.
