We have an exciting opportunity at Sue Ryder to join the dedicated legal team as our Junior Data Protection Officer.

This role will assist in maintaining Data Protection compliance across the charity, managing Data Subject Access Requests, assisting the legal team in updating privacy policies and Data Protection Impact Assessments.

The role will be based in our Colchester office, working 2 days in Colchester and 3 days from home with flexibility for ad hoc meetings as required.


About the role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

* Managing Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs): Coordinate with various departments to fulfill requests from individuals for access to their personal data, ensuring timely and complete responses
* Supporting Policy Development & Updates: Assist in creating, reviewing, and updating privacy policies, notices, and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations
* Assisting with Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs): Provide support in conducting DPIAs for new projects or significant changes to existing data processing activities to identify and mitigate risks
* Promoting Awareness & Training: Help raise staff awareness of data protection issues and best practices and support the delivery of data protection training
* Aiding in the contractual review of data protection clauses in contracts with service providers and partners
* Liaising with Regulators: Assisting in managing communications with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and act as a secondary point of contact.
* Supporting Incident Response: Help with managing data breach incidents, including assisting with reporting and mitigation efforts
* Assisting in implementing measures and a privacy governance framework to manage data use in compliance with the GDPR and other relevant legislation, including developing templates for data collection, and assisting with data mapping and records of data processing and vendor management reviews
* Working with key internal stakeholders in the review of operations and projects and related data processing to ensure compliance with data privacy laws, and where necessary, advising on and monitoring data protection privacy impact assessments
* Liaising with external/ stakeholders and legal specialists when necessary
* Participating in committees/project groups where required


About you:

* The ability to analyse data and identify potential risks or areas for improvement in data handling processes
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for drafting documents and providing information to colleagues
* Familiarity with information technologies and data security practices
* An ability to manage small projects, organise information, and track progress
* Demonstrating high levels of integrity and ethical conduct when handling sensitive information
* Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment
* A foundational understanding of GDPR, UK GDPR, and other global data protection regulations is essential
* Experience in a similar role
