Senior Lighthouse Maintenance Engineer - Civil

Permanent · Harwich · £44,406.00 - £49,394.00 per annum (starting salary) · 37 hours per week

Trinity House works for the benefit and safety of all mariners as a General Lighthouse Authority and maritime charity. Our people are central to our reputation as a leading maritime organisation, as is our commitment as an employer to developing the skills, capabilities and potential of our workforce.

This is a rare opportunity to help maintain 21 historic lighthouses – many in some of the UK's most awe‑inspiring and remote coastal environments. The role is suited to estates, building or civil maintenance professionals and does not necessarily require chartered or graduate engineer status.

Based in Harwich, Essex, this role involves working predominantly across the East and South Coast of England and Gibraltar, with occasional travel to Wales, Cornwall, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and other UK coastal locations. It requires frequent time away from home and a high level of physical fitness.

What will you do

You will lead the ongoing maintenance of the lighthouses and their associated properties. Working closely with the East Coast Technical Manager and the Building Services team, you will ensure the estate is maintained to the highest technical, safety and heritage standards. This is a hands‑on asset management role requiring experience of managing small to medium contracts with autonomy, sound judgement and a strong understanding of construction and compliance obligations.

Key Responsibilities

* Prepare technical specifications and work with our Procurement Team to procure best‑value civil maintenance contracts.
* Assess and appoint technically suitable contractors for civil works.
* Undertake the duties of Client under CDM Regulations and ensure full CDM compliance.
* Work with our Estates and Property Management Team to ensure all necessary planning permissions and listed building consents have been obtained prior to works.
* Manage contractors on site, ensuring works are delivered safely, to specification and to agreed quality standards.
* Monitor works and maintain accurate records within the appropriate management information systems (MMIS).
* Work collaboratively with the Building Services team to maintain estate asset data and engineering standards.

What are we looking for

You will be an experienced building maintenance professional who is confident working independently and managing contractors across multiple sites.

Skills & Experience

* Proven experience in building / estates maintenance and contractor management.
* Experience preparing specifications and tender documentation.
* Strong understanding of HSE requirements within construction, particularly CDM Regulations.
* Experience working with maintenance management information systems.
* Ability to manage work across geographically dispersed and occasionally remote locations.
* Knowledge of heritage or listed buildings (desirable).

Qualifications

* Level 4 qualification (or equivalent experience) in a Civil Engineering, Building or Estate Management discipline.
* Full UK driving licence.

What do we offer

* Membership in the Civil Service Pension Scheme, with generous employer pension contribution of 28.97%.
* Expenses policy covering all food and accommodation while working away.
* Additional payments for overnight stays at lighthouses.
* All required tools, uniform and training provided, ensuring you can carry out your work safely and comfortably.
* Generous annual leave entitlement.
* A unique role combining heritage preservation, infrastructure management and maritime safety.
* The chance to work alongside experienced maritime and engineering professionals.

We welcome qualified individuals to apply and we look forward to reviewing your applications for this exciting opportunity. We are committed to equity within a respectful, diverse and inclusive environment.
