About the Role
As Pharmacy Operations Manager, you will:
• Provide visible and professional leadership across the dispensary, homecare, distribution, and QA teams.
• Take responsibility for the safe and effective running of the operational pharmacy service, including:
• Oversight of medicines receipt, storage, distribution, and supply.
• Management of homecare pharmacy activities in line with clinical and contractual expectations.
• Implementation and assurance of quality systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure full compliance with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and MHRA standards, maintaining safe systems of work and ensuring medicines are handled, stored, and transported correctly.
• Support delivery of the service model, including participation in any weekend, late, or bank holiday rotas if required.
• Lead the operational response to drug alerts, recalls, shortages, and other medicines-related incidents.
• Ensure effective use of pharmacy information systems to monitor service activity, report on KPIs, and drive improvements.
• Work collaboratively with clinical, nursing, logistics, and governance teams to ensure seamless medicines supply and support excellent patient outcomes.
• Act as a role model and senior point of contact for staff queries, patient safety concerns, and service escalations.
Other Responsibilities
Budget and Resource Management
• Manage departmental budgets and resources efficiently.
• Control stock levels and collaborate with finance teams to manage costs and reduce waste.
Regulatory Compliance and Audit
• Lead and coordinate internal and external inspections and audits.
• Prepare documentation and evidence for MHRA, GPHC, or other regulatory bodies.
• Ensure all staff complete mandatory training and comply with health & safety policies.
Risk Management and Incident Reporting
• Manage risk registers and ensure timely reporting and investigation of incidents and near-misses.
• Drive patient safety initiatives and promote learning from incidents to prevent recurrence.
Service Development and Change Management
• Lead projects to improve pharmacy service delivery and operational efficiency.
• Implement new systems or policies to support operational excellence.
Stakeholder Engagement
• Build strong working relationships with clinical teams, commissioners, and partner organisations.
• Represent pharmacy operations at meetings and inspections.
Staff Development and Performance Management
• Conduct appraisals, manage performance, and identify training needs.
• Promote a positive working culture and support workforce wellbeing.
Data Analysis and Reporting
• Analyse service data and KPIs to inform decision-making.
• Produce regular reports for senior management.
About You
We're looking for someone with:
• GPhC registration as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician
• Significant leadership experience in a hospital or homecare pharmacy environment
• Proven ability to manage operational services at scale, ideally across dispensing, distribution, and homecare
• In-depth knowledge of GDP, medicines handling legislation, and clinical governance
• Strong people management skills and experience leading multi-disciplinary teams
• Excellent communication, planning, and analytical skills
• A proactive and improvement-focused mindset
