To maximise your opportunities at securing an Industrial Placement with us this year, we strongly advise that you apply to no more than 3 adverts. (For clarity, multiple roles within a single advert are considered one application.)

Roles Available in Location: Montrose, Barnard Castle, Worthing, Ware

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be:

Currently studying an IMechE accredited undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: July 2026

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £25,400 plus a bonus.

The Roles (4 available)

Role 1 – Mechanical Engineering - Montrose

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

GSK Montrose manufactures a range of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) for respiratory, dermatological and HIV conditions. The Production Engineering team provides support to five key manufacturing areas producing multiple API’s. The team consists of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Inspection, HVAC Engineering, Reliability Engineering and Engineering Maintenance. On a daily basis, the team reacts to resolve any plant breakdown situations. Longer term actions focus on improving efficiency, operability and maintenance of plant. The department also supports the utilities and infrastructure strategy and provides solutions to engineering problems throughout the business.

Key Placement Learnings

16. Ownership of maintenance life cycle plans (establish, update, review)

17. Perform failure investigations

18. Develop technical specification of maintenance contracts

19. Technical input and approvals under the Plant Modification Procedure

20. Make recommendations on technically complex issues through evaluating engineering problems that have a potential business impact.

21. Take account of legal, regulatory and financial implications of engineering standards and changes.

22. Ensure that asset care activities are performed in a compliant manner.

23. Understand appropriate commitments/requirements of the Quality Management System.

24. Follow the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice.

Role 2 – Mechanical Engineering - Barnard Castle

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

Barnard Castle is a key secondary site for GSK with a large number of New Products coming through development at site. We manufacture and supply a huge range of different pharmaceutical products from Sterile Products (Syringes and Vials) to Liquid Inhalations and Dermatologicals. We have a variety of roles for mechanical engineers focussing on improving equipment, reliability and production performance. As a placement student you could be based in one of a number of production and site operations teams.

29. Contributing to safety and quality risk assessments

30. Reducing failure rates and contributing to cost saving analysis

Role 3 – Mechanical Engineering - Worthing

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

There are several Mechanical Engineering opportunities available at the Worthing site.

Within the Manufacturing area, you will be working with highly competent engineers within a highly regulated environment, on equipment which produced numerous API’s.

Within the packaging department, you will experience high speed packaging lines and the importance of a strong reliability programme to maintain successful OEE.

In our production and technical teams, you will support day to operations by conducting root cause analysis to meet our high specifications in quality and EHS.

The utilities and facilities team supports Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) critical systems (water, HVAC, steam, compressed etc.), industrial utilities (waste treatment, chillers, cooling towers) and is the interface with our 3rd party service providers for both our main manufacturing site and our R&D facility.

36. Carrying out continuous improvement activities to ensure good manufacturing practice

37. Gaining a thorough understanding of the equipment, plant and processes used at the site including mechanical design of systems and the ability to problem solve

38. Leading and managing groups of peers or contractors

39. Developing skills in project management and planning projects such as plant modifications, building turnarounds and production line safety improvements

Role 4 – Mechanical Engineering - Ware

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

Overview of the Department

A role at the Ware site could be within several departments:

The Packing Engineering department is responsible for the maintenance of manufacturing lines used for the final packaging step of medical devices.

The Assembly Engineering department is responsible for the maintenance of manufacturing lines used for the device assembly and strip insertion step of Medical devices.

RSC Frontend Engineering manage and improve the Frontend platforms to enable maximum production opportunity through maintenance, breakdowns, obsolescence programs, capital projects and equipment performance.

Manufacturing, Science and Technology (MSAT) department monitor the performance of products and platforms within the Respiratory value streams, our department is both Assembly and Packing. The department oversees all aspects of product lifecycle management, from introduction and scale up of newly developed R&D assets to ensuring robust and repeatable manufacture of commercialised pharmaceutical products.

The Utilities & Facilities department is responsible for the safe and effective operation of all utility systems across two sites of the Ware Campus as well as the management of building services.

Finally, the Oral Solid Dose (OSD) Engineering team at Ware specialise in New Product Introduction (NPI). The team are responsible for maintaining and continuously improving equipment related to tablet manufacturing, including Compression, Granulation, Coating and Continuous Direct Compression (CDC), and for investigating and completing root cause analysis any issues.

Key Placement Learnings

40. Leading projects, E.G. maintenance, equipment improvement or business process projects

41. Developing and understanding of business processes such as Management of Change, Risk Assessment, Machinery Safety, Process Safety etc.

42. Change management (Change controls) and Root Cause Analysis

43. Supporting design for equipment upgrades

44. Problem solving on the assembly equipment to drive down rejects and improve the Cost of waste

45. Managing and resolving complex investigations (customer complaints or online deviations)

46. Risk Assessments (Machinery Safety and Basis of Safety)

47. Leading deviation investigations

48. Developing a sound understanding of the equipment, plant and processes relevant to their degree area.

49. Learning key principles of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), relevant to pharmaceutical manufacturing.

50. Learning to co-operate across multiple teams and departments to achieve business goals
