Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency
This role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with comprehensive knowledge of high, medium, low, and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team. Expertise in control systems design and SCADA/telemetry systems would be beneficial.
You will work within the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate, influencing how we deliver safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitment to net zero carbon. As part of the Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop, maintain and deliver electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems across assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Provide technical guidance and support to staff on electrical systems and equipment, ensuring competency and skills through training and guidance.
* Lead and support the delivery of technical projects, ensuring they meet safety, reliability and sustainability objectives.
* Hold a national incident response role, available during normal working hours or out of hours as required.
* Participate in the strategic planning and execution of the organisation’s engineering and asset management objectives.
Experience and Skills Required
* Good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Strong working knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Experience in testing, isolation and proving of high and low voltage electrical systems.
* Risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies, Failure Mode Effects Analysis and reliability systems.
* Ability to draft and publish electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.

Contract and Working Arrangements
This is a hybrid role with a base location near your home. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. Incident management responsibilities may be allocated throughout your development plan, with appropriate training provided.
