Role Overview:

Generalists are our multi-skilled team

volunteers that carry out emergency support tasks at

scenes of emergencies, major incidents, public events, or

in direct support of communities.

They will act as a realistic reserve in support of the

professional emergency services.

This will release the

professionals to undertake the tasks requiring their higher

level of skills and training by undertaking the more minor

roles.

The tasks Generalist Volunteers will be trained to deal with and act in support of include:

• Road Closures, Cordons, and other Security Support (in support of the Police and

Communities).

• First Aid (in support of communities, incidents, and events).

• Medical Cover (in support of the NHS and Ambulance Services and Communities).

• Urban Search and Rescue (in support of the Fire and Rescue Services).

• Missing Persons (in support of the Police and Communities).

• Reception Stations and Evacuation Shelters (in support of Local Authorities,

Communities, and industry, such as Rail, when needed).

• Welfare, Chaplaincy, and Feeding (in support of Local Authorities and Communities).

• Forest Wildfires and other Countryside Fires (in support of the Fire and Rescue

Services, Forestry Commission, and Communities).

• Storm Response (in support of Local Authorities, Fire and Rescue Services, Forestry

Commission, and Communities).

• Flood Response (in support of Local Authorities, Fire and Rescue Services,

Environmental Agency, and Communities).

• Flood/Fire Area Evacuations (in support of Local Authorities, Police, Fire & Rescue,

Environmental Agency, and Communities).

• Snow Rescue (in support of Local Authorities, Police, and Communities).

• Working with Heritage Organisations (in support of the National Trust, Heritage

England, and other heritage bodies).

Training will include:

• Basic Life Support and First Aid/Casualty Care & Safety for those first on scene.

• Scene Management, including crime scenes, setting up and securing incident

cordons.

• Spectator Safety at events.

• Road Closures and Traffic Control

• Securing buildings or areas during disasters

• Managing Emergency Shelters, including evacuation and recovery tasks during

• Fire Marshalling, including Fire Risk Control and Extinction.

• Health and Safety in Hazadous Environments, including risk assessments,

hazardous materials, infection control, and PPE.

• Search and Rescue Skills, including navigation, and missing person behaviour.

All volunteers will go through the Generalist training and will then be offered the opportunity to

remain as a Generalist, or specialising in over 40 roles, which include both support and

operational roles.

Those with existing proven skillsets will be considered for Specialist roles but will still be

required to complete the Generalist Training.

Recognition of Prior Learning

RPL is a process for recognising learning from previous training, qualifications or experience

to avoid duplication of learning.

It considers whether a Learner can demonstrate and prove

that they meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or

skills they already possess, and do not need to develop through a course of learning.

RPL must be:

• Current: i.e., completed within 3 years.

RPL should only be used as rationale for a reduction in contact/guided learning hours. The

Learner must still undertake assessments of all learning outcomes and criteria of the

qualification to gain an up-to-date qualification certificate.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Complete Generalist Training to ensure the individual is capable of undertaking the

tasks outlined above and also to ensure operating standards.

• Keep a decent level of fitness, to be fit enough for duty appropriate to role. Some

operational tasks can require levels of physical endurance and strength to carry out

necessary tasks, e.g., Guardians, Medics, Auxiliary Fire.

• Respond to events, incidents, or emergencies as part of a Corps response, providing

support as necessary and within the bounds of the skills, knowledge, and qualifications

obtained.

• Support other members of the Corps in their activities and duties, inline with Corps’

policies, procedures, training, and regulations.

• Keep up to date with policies, procedures, training, and regulations.

• Assist communities in actively building resilience through planning and actions,

including engagement activities and possibly public speaking.

• Partake in fundraising activities and community projects, as part of the Corps’ funding

requirements and community outreach strategy.

• Attend weekly Rally Point/Team meetings to build cohesiveness, undertake training,

exercise capabilities, fulfil any other Corps requirements, continue development and

local resilience. discuss JCAC agenda, progress and any necessary talking points for

the week.

Qualifications:

• No formal qualifications are required to be a Corps Generalist, as training will be

provided.

• Any existing qualifications could qualify you to become a Specialist and to fast-track to

leadership or training roles, subject to role availability.
