Overview

Job title: Graduate/Project Environmental Scientist (Water Quality) (Grade A/B)

Employment Type: Permanent, Full Time

Location: Stoke on Trent or Shrewsbury, UK

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated graduate Environmental Scientist to join our busy Hydrology and Hydrogeology (H&H) team to assist in the delivery of water quality work. You will work under the mentorship of industry professionals to build your skills on and off site, supporting a range of clients across the power, waste management, property and infrastructure sectors.

Your projects will include water quality monitoring and reporting, water quality risk assessments to support environmental permit applications, Water Framework Directive assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments. You will collaborate with colleagues from ecology, land quality, permitting and planning teams to support multi-disciplinary projects where water quality expertise is needed.

This role is an opportunity to further develop knowledge of water quality, with an understanding of the legislative requirements underpinning our work, helping clients complete projects in compliance with water quality legislation and best practice. We are ideally looking for a Graduate, but candidates with 1–2 years of relevant post-graduate experience will also be considered.

You will have opportunities to progress within SLR’s career framework, including twice-yearly self-nominating promotion rounds.

Responsibilities

* Water monitoring including sampling of surface water and groundwater for baseline and construction-related programmes, and reporting findings.
* Screening of water quality data against relevant standards after chemical analysis.
* Undertaking quantitative risk assessment methodologies (e.g., Specific Substance (H1) Assessments) to aid discharge permit applications for construction and linear infrastructure; collaborate with the Permitting team to achieve successful outcomes.
* Contributing to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and/or Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments for new developments, identifying risks to the water environment and appropriate mitigations.

There is also significant work for major infrastructure clients as water specialists, including providing best practice advice and permitting support. You may be asked to investigate bespoke water quality problems and to develop knowledge in hydrochemistry.

Other duties

* Support team members on design/implementation of water quality monitoring, laboratory analysis requirements and data quality control.
* Collate, analyse and interpret surface water and groundwater quality datasets.
* Formalise results of water quality investigations in reports and technical notes.
* Assist with scoping technical sections for proposals and undertake site work with appropriate supervision and training.
* Occasional on-site work (unsupervised) depending on activity.

Site work may require being away from home for short periods. On-the-job training will be provided for graduates, with opportunities to develop new skills over time. The role is full time with flexible, hybrid options; part-time arrangements will be considered.
