Job Overview
The Environment Agency is seeking an experienced risk professional to lead the implementation of our Risk Management Framework and drive a programme that strengthens our risk culture across the organization. The role is primarily internal, with opportunities to collaborate with other government departments and senior leadership.
Responsibilities
* Champion and maintain the Risk Management Framework, ensuring alignment with HM Treasury’s Orange Book and organisational needs.
* Lead the rollout of consistent risk management processes across the organization.
* Deliver an annual programme of activities to embed good risk practices and foster a proactive risk culture.
* Provide senior leaders with clear, insightful reporting to support strategic decision‑making.
* Build trusted relationships across teams, offering expert advice and constructive challenge.
* Collaborate with functions such as health & safety and programme management to integrate risk management throughout.
* Coach and support team members to grow and deliver with confidence.
* Respond to incidents as required, including being available for incident response and business continuity support.
Qualifications
* Experience as a technical leader in risk management, with a proven track record of implementing and embedding risk initiatives.
* Comprehensive understanding of the Orange Book and risk management principles, including risk governance and assurance.
* Excellent written and verbal communication, with experience providing expert risk advice and engaging senior leaders.
* Strong relationship‑building skills, able to challenge firmly and constructively across all levels.
* Experience working in a complex, fast‑paced environment, managing competing priorities.
* Ideally holds a risk management qualification or relevant professional membership (e.g. IRM).
* Knowledge of other risk‑based functions such as project/programme management, health and safety.
Additional Information
The role is hybrid. Candidates can be based at any Environment Agency office, with some national travel and overnight stays. Flexible working patterns, including job share, are welcomed. The position may offer future line‑management responsibilities.
