Overview

An exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) team. The post holder will work with the ERAS team and wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality care and an improved patient experience. The role involves supporting patients on the ERAS pathway throughout the perioperative period, including preoperative education and signposting to appropriate services, postoperative symptom management and complication prevention, and follow-up at home to reassure and prevent readmissions. The post holder will contribute to service development projects and help implement service changes in line with current evidence.

This is a dynamic role for someone passionate about improving patient care. The successful candidate will be a team player with strong clinical presence, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work autonomously. They should demonstrate an interest in enhanced recovery and the ability to collaborate across specialties to promote and develop the service.

The successful candidate will collaborate with all members of the Multidisciplinary Team to promote engagement with the ERAS pathways, support pathway development and implementation, stay up to date with current evidence, and educate staff on ERAS principles.

Applicants must have excellent communication and leadership skills to support in delivering excellent, patient-centred care. Initiative, vision, and experience in service development or change implementation are advantageous.

Other responsibilities are outlined in the Job Description. The Christie is a leading cancer centre based in Manchester serving a large regional population and involved in radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery, research, and clinical trials.


Duties and Responsibilities

CLINICAL:

* To assist in the provision of a perioperative service to patients on the ERAS pathways and provide follow up care post discharge.
* Assess the needs of the patient and family, ensuring patient-centred care focused on health and wellbeing.
* Assess educational and informational needs of patient and family, providing up-to-date information to enable participation in planning of care.
* Enhance care within the clinical area by using relevant research outcomes when planning and delivering nursing care.
* Evaluate nursing care and inform senior nursing and medical staff of changing healthcare needs.
* Maintain safe practice according to Hospital Policies and Standards and ensure prescribed drugs and treatments are given accordingly.
* Where appropriate and qualified to do so:
o Prescribe drugs within scope of practice to aid patient recovery.
o Understand and apply the legal and ethical principles of prescribing.
o Stay up to date with prescribing practice and continuing professional development.
* Exercise a high degree of clinical autonomy and professional judgment, treating independently or referring to other health care providers as needed.
* Act as an advocate for the patients and understand legal and ethical issues regarding nurse-led services and professional accountability.
* Mentor, teach, assess, and support students and learners; participate in education and mentorship of staff.
* Ensure accurate documentation of patient care and maintain communication regarding difficult matters or difficult situations.

LEADERSHIP:

* Assist in development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care, protocols, and pathways for ERAS.
* Coordinate ERAS meetings and deputise as chair when the ERAS lead or lead ERAS CNS is absent.
* Evaluate patient experience for ERAS patients alongside the lead ERAS CNS and matron.
* Collaborate with the Christie audit team to monitor and audit service quality and efficiency.
* Support surgical and nursing teams in initiating and implementing change and promote professional accountability.
* Participate in Clinical Risk Assessments and ensure documentation of Clinical Incidents per Hospital Policy.
* Record accidents and complaints as per policy, investigating promptly and compassionately.
* Be aware of responsibilities under Health and Safety at Work Act; foster an environment that improves health, safety, and security.

PROFESSIONAL:

* Lead by example with fair relationships, sound judgment, and upholding equality and diversity.
* Maintain clear and sincere communications, confidentiality, and adherence to the Health and Safety at Work Act with risk assessments as required.
* Act as a positive role model and leader within the team.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

* Maintain awareness of current nursing practice and use educational opportunities to provide up-to-date care.
* Supervise clinical staff, disseminate knowledge, participate in research and audit, and influence practice.
* Ensure own learning and development needs are met and attend mandatory training as required by the Trust.

PERSONAL:

* Agree learning objectives with the lead ERAS CNS to meet personal and professional development goals.
* Demonstrate a pleasant, approachable manner and foster good working relationships.
* Communicate professionally and maintain confidentiality; adhere to Nursing and Midwifery Council codes.
* Seek mentorship or supervision to support development within the role.
