Job location: Salisbury Central Health Clinic, Avon Approach, Salisbury, SP1 3SL. This is a full-time role within the Community Dental Service covering our Salisbury site.
Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time, experienced and highly motivated qualified Dental Nurse with excellent clinical and administrative skills to join our dynamic Community Dental team. The post holder will be a qualified registered Dental Nurse with excellent clinical, communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. The Community Dental Service in Wiltshire and Swindon offers urgent care clinics for patients in dental pain, special care clinics for adults and children with additional needs, and hospital sessions in Salisbury, Swindon and Bath.
You must be a car driver with access to a vehicle. The role may require work at other Dental Clinics. Weekend and bank holiday work on a rota basis is required. Hours are 08:30 – 17:00, five days per week with one hour for lunch.
Responsibilities
* To comply with GDC standards and Scope of Practice.
* To comply with GWH Trust Policies & CDS Local Operating Procedures.
* Maintain own clinical and professional development in dental nursing and participate in annual appraisal.
* Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives, colleagues and other health professionals; liaise with schools, nursing homes and hospital departments as required.
* Provide and receive complex and sensitive patient-related medical information; address barriers to communication (e.g., use of Language Line for non-English speaking patients and carers).
* Provide pre- and post-operative advice on dental care to patients.
* Take responsibility for Health & Safety and Fire inspection checklists; assist in risk assessments and safe systems of work.
* Prepare the dental surgery and chair-side assistance during dental treatment.
* Enter patient information into the SFD IT system as directed by the Dentist.
* Receive patients into the treatment room and assist the dentist during clinical procedures.
* Maintain decontamination and infection control in line with CDS Infection Control LOP and site decontamination protocols.
* Maintain stock levels and ensure materials and emergency drugs are within expiry; manage storage accordingly.
* Check invoices for incoming stock and materials.
* Act as chaperone and witness for the dentist; provide dental nurse cover for clinics as needed, sometimes at short notice.
* Participate in regular audits and undertake additional duties as directed by the Dental Nurse Team Manager; maintain skills through training.
* Carry out duties away from base, including domiciliary visits, dental epidemiology surveys, day surgery under general anaesthetic, conscious sedation sessions and health education programmes.
* Work with manual handling aids (including hoist) and maintain manual handling training compliance.
* Ensure mandatory training compliance and undertake enhanced CPD to meet GDC registration requirements (50 verifiable hours in a 5-year cycle).
Patient Care and Other Requirements
* Work as part of a team to deliver high-quality dental care to patients.
* Travel to other clinics as required to maintain service cover.
* Ability to work weekends and Bank Holidays; driving and access to a motor vehicle with business insurance.
* Regular exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances and interaction with anxious patients.
Working Conditions and Physical/Mental Demands
* Occasional exposure to unpleasant conditions and confined spaces in patients' homes; possible verbal aggression.
* Frequent contact with body fluids, blood and saliva.
* Physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, and moving equipment; operating dental equipment for domiciliary, radiography, sedation, epidemiology and clinics.
* Frequent intense concentration; emotional demands from caring for distressed patients.
Qualifications
Essential
* Registration as a DCP with General Dental Council
* NEBDN National Certificate, NVQ level 3 in Oral Health (Dental Nursing) or an equivalent qualification with relevant experience
* Willingness to study towards NEBDN Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing via CPD funding
Desirable
* Sedation Dental Nurse Qualification (additional qualification)
* Special Care Dental Nurse Qualification (additional qualification)
* Dental Radiography Qualification (additional qualification)
Experience
Essential
* Experience of working as a Dental Nurse
* Experience of Health and Safety practices relevant to this post
* Wide range of experience in dental procedures
* Experience in operating IT systems
Desirable
* Experience operating SFD IT system
* Experience of working within a Community Dental setting
