We are hiring a Hydraulic Technician to join our Assets & Operations Department. About the Role The Hydraulic Technician supports the Assets & Operations team in the build, maintenance, testing and readiness of hydraulic and mechanical systems across MDL equipment. This role is primarily workshop-based, focused on hydraulic power units (HPUs), pipework, hose assemblies, valves, cylinders and associated systems. The technician will be responsible for ensuring hydraulic systems are installed, maintained and tested to the required standards to support safe and efficient equipment operation. The role also supports wider MDL equipment scopes, including refurbishment, commissioning, mobilisation and fault finding, ensuring equipment is delivered in a ready-for-use condition. Responsibilities & Accountabilities Hydraulic System Build & Assembly • Assemble and install hydraulic systems including HPUs, manifolds, pipework and hose assemblies • Ensure correct routing, fitting and torqueing of hydraulic and mechanical components • Work from hydraulic schematics and mechanical drawings to complete builds accurately • Support new equipment builds and system upgrades Maintenance, Inspection & Refurbishment • Carry out inspection and maintenance of hydraulic systems across MDL assets • Support refurbishment and overhaul of hydraulic equipment • Identify wear, damage, contamination and performance issues • Assist in maintaining asset condition to meet readiness requirements Testing, Commissioning & Flushing • Perform hydraulic flushing activities in line with cleanliness standards • Carry out pressure testing and system verification • Support commissioning and functional testing of hydraulic systems (FAT/SIT) • Ensure systems meet performance and safety requirements prior to release Fault Finding & Diagnostics • Diagnose and resolve hydraulic faults including pressure loss, leaks and system inefficiencies • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions • Work closely with mechanical and electrical teams during fault finding activities • Escalate complex issues where required Equipment Readiness & Operational Support • Support preparation of equipment for mobilisation and project delivery • Assist with reinstatement and demobilisation activities • Ensure hydraulic systems are in a ready-for-use condition • Support wider workshop and yard activities as required Documentation & Systems • Complete all required documentation including test records, flushing records and checklists • Support accurate recording of work in company systems (CMMS, Teams, Procedure completion) • Ensure traceability of hydraulic work and system status • Follow work instructions and procedures HSEQ • Follow all safety procedures and guidance at all times • Work safely with high-pressure systems and hydraulic equipment • Identify and report hazards, defects and near misses • Stop work if conditions are unsafe or not compliant with MDL standards Definition of Good Performance • Delivers hydraulic work safely, correctly and to a high standard • Demonstrates strong competence in hydraulic systems and fault finding • Completes testing, flushing and commissioning activities accurately • Maintains high levels of equipment quality and reliability • Works effectively with fabrication, electrical and workshop teams • Completes documentation clearly and on time • Shows proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement Measure of Success Core Measures (Long Term) • Hydraulic systems delivered in a ready-for-use condition • Reduction in hydraulic-related failures and rework • Successful completion of testing, flushing and commissioning activities • Contribution to asset reliability and operational readiness Supporting Indicators (Flexible) • Quality and accuracy of hydraulic work completed • Feedback from supervisors and team members • Compliance with procedures and safety standards • Efficiency in completing assigned tasks • Engagement in continuous improvement activities Operating Behaviour • Takes ownership of hydraulic systems and work quality • Works in a practical, methodical and safe manner • Communicates clearly with team members and supervisors • Supports team delivery and collaborates across disciplines • Shows initiative in identifying and resolving issues • Maintains a professional and reliable attitude Authority & Boundaries • Works under direction of the Principal Mechanic and Supervisors • Carries out hydraulic tasks within own level of competence • Does not make independent technical decisions outside scope without escalation • Escalates issues, risks or uncertainties where required Skills & Experience • Modern Apprenticeship (or equivalent) in Engineering (Essential) • Hydraulic Training – Level 2 (BFPA or equivalent) (Essential) • Proven experience working with hydraulic systems (HPUs, pipework, hose assemblies) (Essential) • Ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics and engineering drawings (Essential) • Experience in flushing, pressure testing and commissioning hydraulic systems (Preferred) • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability (Preferred) • Basic IT skills and familiarity with workshop systems (Preferred) Personal Attributes • Strong practical and hands-on approach • Good attention to detail • Safety-focused mindset • Reliable and punctual • Ability to work independently and within a team • Willingness to learn and develop • Proactive and solution-oriented Work Environment Work is primarily based at MDL’s Gateway site in Cove, Aberdeen, with occasional travel to other MDL locations or client sites (onshore or offshore) as required.
