Job Description
We’re looking for an experienced and inspirational leader to lead the National Environmental Assessment Service (NEAS).
NEAS primarily focuses on enabling the environmental agency to deliver its capital and asset management programmes efficiently, in compliance with environmental legislation, policies, and corporate priorities.

We’re seeking an inclusive, collaborative, and driven leader who can guide teams through change while supporting a diverse workforce to thrive and deliver high standards.
As well as leadership experience, you should have a background in project delivery in line with environmental legislation, policies, and strategies. A proven track record of working closely with senior leaders, industry experts, delivery partners, and external stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes at a strategic level is essential.
Principal Accountabilities
* Lead a team of approximately 45 staff, including experts in environmental legislation, heritage, carbon, landscape architecture, and biodiversity net gain.
* Manage proactive stakeholder relationships that build trust, foster collaboration, and create new opportunities.
* Set strategic priorities aligned with broader EA strategies and motivate your team to deliver operationally and efficiently.
* Develop and embed a culture of continuous improvement to adapt to changing business, environmental, and stakeholder needs.
* Promote a culture of psychological safety, empowering confident decision-making and innovation.
* Lead planning and delivery of change initiatives within your team and across relevant business relationships, amidst multiple ongoing change programmes.
The Team
You will join the Environmental Assurance & Reservoir Regulation (EARR) Department within the Flood & Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) Directorate.
NEAS is a nationally dispersed team of over 140 passionate, experienced, and skilled professionals, ensuring that our strategies and projects navigate environmental complexities efficiently.
You will collaborate closely with two other managers, fostering a unified leadership approach.
Experience/Skills Required
* Significant experience in Project Delivery, Environmental Legislation, or related fields.
* Proven leadership of technical teams, translating strategy into operational results.
* Experience in fostering a high-performance team culture, role modelling accountability, and prioritising people over process.
* Innovative thinking with a focus on collaboration and data utilization.
* Decisiveness in risk-based decision-making, removing barriers to delivery.
* Comfort operating in uncertain environments and communicating complex issues clearly to senior stakeholders.
* Ability to build consensus and influence senior internal and external stakeholders for the benefit of the environment and the business.
