Job overview

Ward 16a is an acute surgical ward supporting multiple surgical disciplines and is working towards implementing Enhanced Surgical Care Bays as part of the ward establishment and footprint.

If you are enthusiastic, motivated, open to change and trying new ideas, whilst supporting an established and highly skilled ward team, this could be a great opportunity for you to try a new role whilst learning new skills and being supported in your management and senior leadership journey.

This is a full-time position (37.5hrs a week), but flexible working would be considered as long as needs of service are met.

Main duties of the job

The ward manager is expected to provide senior clinical leadership and supervision to a specific clinical function / department. They will be expected to directly manage and be accountable for the allocated human and physical resources for that area, maintaining and working within the allocated financial budget. The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the overall safety and management of the ward / department 24 / 7 ensuring plans are in place to maintain the provision of the service and to provide quality care.

The ward manager will need to provide specialist clinical knowledge and expertise in their related field. They will lead the team to provide qualitative, productive, safe evidenced based nursing care and therapy which promotes best practice and best outcomes for patients.

The ward manager will work in collaboration with the matron to look at new and innovative ways of providing positive patient and staff experience. This will be demonstrated with the patient and staff experience feedback questionnaires.

Outcomes will be based on direct and indirect patient feedback, audits both internal and external, peer reviews, matron’s rounds and corporate quality targets for both patients and staff. Please see attached Job Description for more detailed information.

Experience

Essential criteria

1. Significant experience at a band 6 level within the NHS
2. Proven track record in change management, team leadership and performance management
3. Previous experience in teaching, coaching, mentoring

Education, Qualificaiton & Training

Essential criteria

4. Good general education
5. Registered Nurse (Level 1)/ Qualified Physiotherapist / Occupational Therapist
6. Degree related to field (or equivalent experience)
7. Completion of appropriate management and leadership programme
8. Teaching and Assessment recognised qualification
9. Recognised advanced communication skills

Skills, Abilities & Knowlege

Essential criteria

10. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
11. Proven ability to utilise word, power point and excel to a level of producing documents, reports.
12. Proven ability to analyse highly complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them
13. Evidence of participation in audit, research and development of staff
14. Proven track record with dealing with human resource concerns

16. The post holder may be required to work across all sites and will be required to travel between the sites in a timely manner
