Purpose of the Fixed Term Post
This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis with the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned with the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Responsibilities
* Flexibly respond to the pressures and needs of the services, and fulfil duties of the agreed weekly job plan.
* Maintain the highest standards of management of breast conditions and disease.
* Attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings of various types as appropriate.
* Wherever possible manage emergency breast referrals within the breast unit during office hours; no requirement to participate in the General Surgery out of hours on call rota.
* Provide high-quality training within the breast unit alongside colleagues and clinical leads for that area.
* Train and supervise junior medical staff that work with you and devote time to this activity on a regular basis.
* Actively support ongoing research themes and projects in line with the expectations of a vibrant academic hospital, including recruitment to clinical trials, and stay up to date with Good Clinical Practice.
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
* Higher general surgery qualification (e.g., FRCS)
* Participation in appraisal and revalidation
* Experience in breast surgery
* Experience in surgical aspects of breast screening
* Experience in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery
* Commitment to working within national guidelines for breast cancer management
* Experience in the management of breast disease
* Entry on the GMC specialist register via (A) CCT or CESR (CP) – proposed date within 6 months of interview, or CESR, or European Community Rights
* Evidence of participation in research and service development
* Membership of the Association of Breast Surgery
* Membership of other relevant subspecialty associations
* Specialist breast surgery qualification
* Oncoplastic fellowship or equivalent
Aptitudes and Skills
* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
* Demonstrate good organisational skills, including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
* Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances that may change rapidly
