Main Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for delivering engineering solutions and applying problem-solving skills to support plant efficiency and production output. You will also identify opportunities to improve methods and ways of working.
Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
1. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary maintenance team
2. Taking ownership of a specific plant process area
3. Ensuring timely completion of preventative and predictive maintenance
4. Planning and executing major shutdowns and overhauls
5. Managing contractors on specific jobs and projects
6. Troubleshooting and resolving maintenance issues to improve plant availability
7. Driving continuous improvement in safety and environmental standards
8. Scoping and delivering projects that enhance business performance
9. Overseeing construction and installation of new projects
10. Managing commissioning and handover processes
11. Building strong relationships with key suppliers, contractors, and internal teams
12. Conducting safety briefings and toolbox talks
13. Actively participating in near-miss reporting and safety initiatives
14. Monitoring work activities through regular site visits to ensure high-quality mechanical execution
15. Ensuring all planned and scheduled tasks have appropriate job plans, scaffolding, and parts in place
16. Enforcing compliance with safety rules and procedures, ensuring safe working practices across the team
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal Mechanical Engineer will demonstrate proven experience in mechanical engineering, safety-related control systems, and industrial automation, along with the ability to respond promptly to unplanned work. A technical understanding of cement plant operations would be an advantage but not essential.
Key requirements include:
17. A degree in Mechanical Engineering; an MBA or Master’s degree would be an advantage
18. IOSH or equivalent qualification; NEBOSH certification is desirable
19. Practical and technical experience with refractory systems is essential
20. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to communicate, motivate, and influence cross-functional teams
21. Demonstrated expertise in delivering mechanical engineering best practices, including safe asset design and regulatory compliance
22. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to instruct and train others effectively
23. A solution-oriented approach to investigating and resolving maintenance issues
24. A track record of operating as a subject matter expert in mechanical engineering
