We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Construction and Engineering lawyer to join our growing team, based in Guildford. The role will suit someone with excellent people skills and a desire to develop their career within a friendly, collegiate team recognized for its expertise in this area.
While the role ideally suits candidates with both contentious and non-contentious construction experience, we welcome applicants with primarily contentious or non-contentious backgrounds. This position offers a clear route for progression, with promotion opportunities for the right candidate.
The team's client base is impressive, providing exposure to high-value, complex disputes and projects across sectors such as logistics, education, and automotive manufacturing, involving main contractors and sub-contractors.
The Construction team is part of the Real Estate department, which includes 7 partners and 22 lawyers. It is regarded as one of the leading real estate practices in South East outside London, ranked in Band 1 in the Legal 500 for both construction and commercial property.
Our clients commend us for being approachable, responsive, and knowledgeable, with seminars and industry days that are informative and on-point. Support within the department includes access to knowledge lawyers, paralegals, and extensive online resources.
The role involves advising on a broad range of contentious and non-contentious construction matters. We support flexible working arrangements, including full-time and part-time options.
Qualifications and Experience
We seek team players with experience in adjudication, arbitration, and litigation, capable of providing practical, commercial advice early in project distress scenarios. Typical disputes include payment disputes, professional negligence, delays, and defective works.
On the non-contentious side, experience in leading and advising on transactions, drafting and negotiating contracts, and providing ongoing project advice is essential.
The successful candidate will work with a diverse client base, including employers, professionals, contractors, and sub-contractors, across various sectors. There are opportunities for career growth, and all team members are encouraged to develop their practices and contacts.
Participation in business development, seminars, workshops, and marketing is expected. A good understanding of the construction and engineering sectors, strong interpersonal skills, excellent academics, and high-quality experience from a major City or leading practice are preferred.
