Manufacturing Engineer – HAPS Production System (Farnborough, UK)
Location: Farnborough, Hampshire, UK.
AALTO is a global leader in stratospheric Earth observation and connectivity. We design, manufacture and deploy the Zephyr High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), an unmanned solar‑electric aircraft that can remain in the stratosphere for days, weeks and months. Zephyr operates above 60,000‑feet, filling the operational gap between satellites and terrestrial assets and providing a complementary solution for government and commercial customers.
Job Summary
We are looking for a Manufacturing Engineer to deliver engineering solutions to a new production system that delivers our HAPS aircraft and ground support equipment as we transition from R&D to serial production.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and qualify a HAPS production system using manufacturing systems engineering tools and processes (cellular production approach, lean process flow, line balancing, capital investment items, factory layout, simulation).
* Deliver shop‑floor requirements to the HAPS Facilities Management team.
* Create or change MRP shop‑floor routings, job card definitions, shop‑floor standard operating instructions (SOIs) and quality care cards.
* Develop technical dossiers and support procurement activities, supply‑chain monitoring and make‑vs‑buy decisions.
* Provide technical problem‑solving support to production and supply chain.
* Apply APQP as appropriate.
* Perform Design for Manufacture (DFM) / Design to Cost (DTC) studies and provide input to design teams.
* Liaise with MGSE / Jig & Tools (design, manufacture, calibration & maintenance).
You Will Also Be Responsible For
* Derive and enable production KPI’s in conjunction with operations teams.
* Continuously improve the production system in line with business targets.
* Enable health and safety target achievement.
* Enable a “Right First Time” quality culture with associated business systems and feedback loops.
Experience & Qualifications
* Experience within the aerospace and/or space industry.
* Experience in one or more of the following areas:
o Avionics.
o Assembly, integration and test.
* Experience creating assembly process instructions.
* Experience creating ERP routings.
* Experience using RCCA methodology.
* Ability to work independently and within a team.
* Excellent communication skills.
* English to negotiation level.
Desired Experience
* Experience with creating/editing BoMs.
* Experience using PLM and ERP tools (e.g. Arena and Microsoft Dynamics 365).
* Experience with the creation of test plans in an avionics environment.
* Experience working in a highly regulated industry (CAA; Part G; Part J; etc).
