Education Welfare Officer – Join Us in Making a Real Difference
Due to staff retirement, we are looking for a committed, enthusiastic and passionate Education Welfare Officer to join our team and help ensure that every child and young person in Hull receives their full educational entitlement. This is a genuinely rewarding role where you will work closely with schools, children and families to remove barriers to education and support improved school attendance. Responsibilities
* Building trusting, supportive relationships with children, young people, families and schools to understand the social, emotional and practical factors affecting school attendance.
* Undertake home visits to assess social, emotional and educational problems and must be able to demonstrate experience of decision making using your own initiative.
* Working creatively with schools and partner agencies to identify challenges early and plan effective, coordinated support.
* Using your own initiative and judgement to make informed decisions in sometimes complex or challenging situations.
* Encouraging, motivating and empowering families to recognise the value of education and the importance of regular attendance.
* Providing advice and guidance to schools around Children Missing Education, Elective Home Education and DfE statutory guidelines.
* Fulfilling statutory responsibilities, including:
* Conducting Targeting Support meetings with school as part of the DfE statutory guidance, Working Together to Improve School Attendance.
* Investigating Children Missing Education referrals
* Supporting families around Permanent Exclusions
* Undergoing prosecution work in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE).
* Attending court as a witness when required.
What You’ll Bring
* Previous experience of working with families, children or within a school or education setting.
* The ability to produce clear, professional and well‑structured written reports.
* Strong communication skills, including the confidence to work with families facing difficulties or resistance.
* A calm, resilient and empathetic approach, with the ability to relate to children and young people in a positive, empowering way.
* Confidence and professionalism when carrying out the legal elements of the role.
* Flexibility in your approach to work and the ability to travel independently across the city, transporting yourself and any necessary materials safely and efficiently.
