Words Beyond Borders is a small, heart-led UK initiative offering free, gentle English lessons for people who want to build confidence and connection through language.
Our learners come from all walks of life, including individuals who have moved to new countries, those rebuilding their lives in a new place, and adults who want to feel more comfortable using English in everyday life.
We believe that language is more than grammar - it’s belonging.
We focus on understanding, confidence, and kindness, not tests or perfection.
This is our first pilot program, and we’re inviting volunteers to help shape it.
You’ll be part of a small, supportive founding group building something meaningful from the start.
We’re looking for volunteer English tutors to join our pilot round of lessons.
You don’t need a teaching degree or ESL certificate - just empathy, patience, and curiosity.
Each tutor will be matched with one learner for weekly online sessions designed to build confidence, conversation, and trust.
What you’ll do:
* Teach one learner online for 30–45 minutes per week (for 6 weeks)
* Follow lesson plan guidelines and pre-made materials
* Add your own creativity - adapt or design short activities based on our plans
* Focus on confidence, not correction
* Join short weekly check-ins for community and support
What You’ll Gain
* A full Tutor Onboarding Pack and mini training session
* Lesson plan guidelines and flexible templates
* Weekly support and check-ins
* A chance to co-create and shape our first program
* Certificate of Volunteering after completion
You’ll gain real experience in inclusive education, cross-cultural communication, and confidence-based teaching - all within a kind, flexible environment.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, including:
* People interested in communication, languages, or community work
* Those with lived experience of neurodiversity or non-traditional learning
* Fluent or near-fluent English speakers
* Reliable, patient people who enjoy connecting with others
You don’t need to be an expert - just a good listener who believes in helping others grow.
Commitment
* 1–2 hours per week for 6 weeks (pilot stage)
* 100% remote (Zoom or Google Meet)
* Flexible scheduling - you and your learner choose what works best
