Overview
Aphasia Support is looking to recruit an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to lead on a new support project for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds. Funding has been secured via a VCSE Work & Health Trailblazer grant. The charity plans to create three in-person support groups across Leeds to support people with aphasia of working age into employment, education, training and/or improved health outcomes. The post holder will work with a dedicated Community Engagement Officer for Leeds. Most support is expected to be delivered through the three new groups, with home-based or online support available for those unable to access the groups. Venues are expected to be finalised by the end of September, with a start ideally in October. This is a fixed-term position until 31 March 2026.
Main duties
* Be the main point of contact for NHS referral partners and other organisations into the charity's support offering for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds.
* Complete in-person assessments for all new referrals in Leeds who meet the eligibility criteria for the project.
* Oversee three brand new support groups for people with aphasia of working age in Leeds.
* Ensure outcome measures are completed for each participant on the project and ensure all project paperwork is complete in time for reporting requirements.
* Provide support and mentoring for the Community Engagement Officer who is new in post.
* Complete other tasks which are commensurate with the role.

Aphasia Support is a forward-thinking charity whose mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with aphasia and their carers by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support. We aim to create a world where every person with aphasia has access to support.
The charity has a close-knit staff team of six, including CEO, Fundraising & Communications Manager, 3x Community Engagement Officers and an Administrator. We also work with several SLTs on a consultancy basis and have over 60 volunteers. The charity has five aims:
* To reduce isolation of people with aphasia
* To improve communication skills and wellbeing of people with aphasia
* To raise awareness and understanding of aphasia
* To improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of carers and volunteers in providing support to people with aphasia
* To supplement NHS services by providing long-term support for people with aphasia

Requirements
Qualifications
* Hold a recognised speech and language therapy degree accredited by RCSLT
* HPC Registered to practice as a SLT
* Registered member of RCSLT
* Evidence of extensive professional development and outcomes in advanced practice
Experience
* Extensive experience as an SLT supporting people with communication difficulties such as aphasia and apraxia of speech
* Ability to perform specialised SLT assessments forming the basis for support plans
* Knowledge of the national stroke service model, particularly life after stroke services
* Knowledge of computer therapy apps to support communication goals, including AAC for aphasia and apraxia of speech
* Knowledge of supported conversation techniques

* Strong evidence of participation in service development
