Speech & Language Therapist

We are looking to appoint a dynamic, motivated, enthusiastic, forward-thinking Speech & Language Therapist to work within our Neurological Rehabilitation Unit.

The NRU is a 12 bedded local specialist rehabilitation unit that provides a neurological rehabilitation service which enables patients with long term neurological conditions including patients with an acute injury or episode, to access rehabilitation that is coordinated, timely & responsive to patient needs.

You will work within a multi professional team giving neurological rehabilitation specific advice & guidance to the wider MDT, and have clinical responsibility to meeting patient outcomes.

We are looking for applications from suitable therapists who have experience of providing intervention for swallowing and/or communication difficulty within an integrated multidisciplinary team.

You will work closely with the MDT and provide supervision/support to other staff.

Main duties of the job

As SLT you will:

* Provide assessment & management of communication & swallowing disorders.
* Devise evidence led therapy programmes for patients at a specialist level, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary working to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.
* Maintain high standards of clinical care to achieve the best outcomes for patients.
* Manage a clinical caseload with autonomy.
* Contribute to clinical leadership/supervision facilitating a culture of learning/reflective practice.
* Have high level communication & excellent interpersonal skills to negotiate & establish collaborative partnerships with patients & professionals.
* Ensure compliance with clinical governance being responsible for ensuring Infection Control policy/procedures are followed.
* Assist in service development & development projects as we strive to transform & modernise patient care.
* The team is committed to personal development & provides allocated time for CPD, training & wellbeing.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post. The postholder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed. The content of this post will be reviewed in consultation with the postholder when necessary and in line with the service developments.

* To provide high quality clinical advice on the assessment, diagnosis and management of inpatients on the unit, who may have communication and/or swallowing difficulties. This could include those with complex needs.
* To provide support, education, and advice to more junior SLTs, nursing and AHP colleagues specifically in relation to inpatients with communication and swallowing difficulties and to ensure adequate access to the service is maintained, for this client group.
* To follow and contribute to the development of departmental policies/guidelines and to participate in the development of innovations in service delivery taking account of Clinical Governance.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

* To provide clinical expertise and advice on the assessment, diagnosis, and therapy to adults with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. This may include those with tracheostomies.
* To participate in the planning and implementation of the day-to-day operation of the Speech and Language Therapy Service to adults with communication or swallowing difficulties, in the Barnsley area.
* To participate in the management of the adult speech and language therapy service, relevant to the client group, and to prepare, implement and evaluate communication and swallowing programmes and advice for clients to ensure the delivery of designated standards of care consistent with service policies and RCSLT guidelines.
* To demonstrate sound clinical judgment, including negotiation, differential diagnosis, reflection, evaluation, and the development of care plans.
* To demonstrate flexibility with clients, carers, and others around individual case management.
* To provide advice regarding the needs of individual clients to the multi-agency team, demonstrating team-working skills.
* To develop and deliver specialised training packages to a variety of recipients with respect to adults with communication or swallowing difficulties, including to other professional groups, with the support of more senior members of staff.
* To share knowledge within a multidisciplinary team approach and to ensure the effective use of professional resources.
* To provide advice and support to volunteers and assistants and to provide mentoring to newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists.
* To provide student placements in line with RCSLT guidelines and to assist in the development of students from other professional groups.
* To maintain accurate and timely clinical records in line with Departmental and Trust protocols, write appropriate reports, and to provide statistical information to facilitate future business planning in line with Trust objectives.

Person Specification


Special Knowledge/Skills

* Proven verbal and interpersonal skills which are able to adapt to the communication situation.
* Awareness of alternative and augmentative communication.
* Ability to use initiative.
* Knowledge of the functions of related professions within this client group.
* Experience of the management of communication and swallowing difficulties in patients with a tracheostomy.


Training

* Proven post graduate accredited (or equivalent) dysphagia training and experience.
* Completion of post graduate training relevant to client group (primarily traumatic and acquired brain injury).


Qualifications

* Degree in speech and language pathology or therapy or equivalent.
* Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist Certificate to Practice as a Speech and Language Therapist.
* Current registration with HCPC.
* Current member of RCSLT.


Experience

* Proven post graduate SLT experience providing assessment, diagnosis, and management of adults with swallowing and communication difficulties.
* Proven awareness and experience of the requirement for excellence in clinical record keeping.
* Experience in working autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Previous experience working with people who have had a traumatic or acquired brain injury.
* Experience co-ordinating the work of others.


Personal Attributes

* Proven organisational and time management skills.
* Flexible and adaptive skills.
* A current driving licence and access to a car during the working day is essential (reasonable adjustments will be considered for any applicants who are unable to drive due to a disability).


Physical Attributes

* Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post. A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to the need to act with fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where the sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).
