Exciting Opportunity for a Highway Operative in North Lincolnshire
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a delivery-focused Highway Operative to join my client's established Highways & Transport team on a contract basis, supporting essential highway maintenance activities across North Lincs.
The successful applicant will form part of a hands-on team responsible for keeping the local highway network safe and operational through effective maintenance, repair, and emergency response works.
The main duties of the Highway Operative are:
* Erect and remove traffic management systems in line with the Safety at Streetworks and Roadworks Code of Practice.
* Drive highway vehicles and tippers, subject to the relevant licence, training, and competency.
* Operate powered tools and plant including breakers, compactors, cutters, rollers, and other specialist machinery.
* Mix, lay, level, and compact bituminous materials, concrete, mortar, and associated surfacing products.
* Lay and fix kerbs, slabs, blocks, and setts in accordance with specifications.
* Install, repair, and dismantle highway furniture such as signs, guardrails, fencing, and nameplates.
* Reconstruct inspection chambers and adjust drainage features like road gullies and manholes.
* Complete accurate records including time sheets, work logs, and vehicle inspection forms.
* Provide emergency response for incidents such as flooding, winter gritting, road traffic accidents, and civil emergencies.
* Work in accordance with company SHEQ standards and procedures aligned with ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001.
* Perform all duties in compliance with local authority policies and procedures.
* Undertake other relevant duties appropriate to the role as required.
The Highway Operative will have key experience in:
* Working in outdoor and physically demanding construction environments.
* Operating hand tools, plant, and equipment with due regard to safety and quality.
* Adhering to safe systems of work, including risk assessments and method statements.
* Self-managing workloads and demonstrating flexibility in work approach.
* Responding to out-of-hours emergencies as part of a standby rota.
* Driving Category C vehicles and ideally holding a Driver CPC Qualification.
* Maintaining detailed and accurate work records.
* Preferably holding a City & Guilds Streetworks Operative accreditation or Chapter 8 training.
* A willingness to engage in structured training, mentoring, and career progression pathways.
* Understanding of COSHH regulations, construction site safety, and environmental standards.
