Technician

Offer description

Overview

This permanent, full-time position has a starting salary of £41,585 per annum based on a 36 hour working week.

We are excited to be hiring a new LGV (large goods vehicle) Engineering Technician to join the fantastic team at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, based in Reigate.

The working hours are on a rolling rota of 4 days per week, Monday to Friday from 07:30-17:00. (Week 1 Monday to Thursday, Week 2 Tuesday to Friday). During busy periods, or where required, you may work outside these times to ensure we maintain support to the front-line crews.

About the Role

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SF&RS) provides an emergency service that looks after approximately 1.18 million people, spread across approximately 1,676 square kilometres, including several large urban areas such as Guildford, Redhill, and Woking. Our Engineering team maintains a diverse fleet, from frontline appliances to boats and specialist vehicles, and everything in between, ensuring everything is ready when it matters most.

As an LGV Engineering Technician, no two days are the same. One day you might be servicing an appliance, the next repairing the Jaws of Life! You'll work primarily at our Reigate workshop, servicing and repairing our fleet; approximately 200 vehicles and 18,000 pieces of equipment.

You'll join a growing team that supports frontline crews, carrying out repairs and maintenance to high standards, sometimes independently. Due to the nature of our work, there is a need for Technicians to be mobile; carrying out safety inspections and repairs across the county.

In future, you may have the opportunity to join our team of on-call breakdown Technicians who share a rota to provide out-of-hours support to our entire fleet, which can be challenging during busy periods such as major incidents. This is paid as overtime with an on-call allowance.

Key responsibilities

* Service, maintain, and repair operational vehicles and specialist fire equipment, including pumps, ladders, cutting tools, hydraulic platforms, Unimogs, Land Rovers, water carriers, and boats
* Ensuring SF&RS operates a safe, legal, and reliable fleet 24/7, 365 days a year
* Completing maintenance records accurately and on time, working closely with our Administrative Support team

Your Application

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with our behaviours:

* Educated to GCSE standard in English and Mathematics, or equivalent alternative
* City and Guilds HGV Motor Vehicle Mechanics or equivalent, IMI Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair - Heavy Vehicle
* Minimum Category B driving licence and flexibility to work out on the road independently
* Strong problem-solving and engineering skills, including welding
* Willingness to train on specialist vehicles and equipment

Thinking of a Career Change?

We welcome applicants with relevant transferable skills and experience, providing full training to help you upskill as an LGV Technician.

To apply

We request that you submit a CV and you will be asked the following 4 questions:

* Please describe a time when you diagnosed and repaired a complex fault on a vehicle or specialist equipment. What steps did you take to identify the issue, and what was the outcome?
* This role often requires working without direct supervision and responding to urgent repairs across the county. Can you give an example of when you managed a repair independently under time pressure? How did you ensure safety and quality standards were met?
* This role involves working on a wide range of vehicles and specialist equipment, which you may not have encountered before. How do you approach learning new skills or adapting to unfamiliar tasks, and what motivates you to embrace these opportunities?
* Our Engineering team plays a vital role in supporting frontline crews and ensuring a safe, reliable fleet. What motivates you to work in a service that directly impacts public safety, and how would you contribute to our team's success?

The job advert closes at 23:59 on 24.10.2025 with interviews planned to follow.

We look forward to receiving your application, please click on the apply online button below to submit.

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)

Surrey County Council is undergoing Local Government Reorganisation, moving from a two-tier system to new unitary councils in April 2027. Your role will transfer with current terms and conditions to one of these new councils, supporting local devolution and greater powers for our communities.

Our Commitment

We are a disability confident employer which means if you have shared a disability on your application form and have evidenced you meet the minimum criteria, we guarantee you an interview.

Your skills and experience truly matter to us. From application to your first day, we're committed to supporting you with any adjustments you need, we value inclusion and warmly welcome you to join and help build a workplace where everyone belongs.
