Job Summary:
The Application Engineer is responsible for supporting our PON communications business in delivering high quality, customer-focused OLT PON products to market. The successful candidate will focus on designing and executing experiments to prove, optimize, and support our HSPON next generation OLT combo products as they are intended to be used in our customer's applications. The Application Engineering function supports all phases of the product lifecycle, from Product Definition through NPI development, production validation, and end-of-life, serving as the primary interface with customers and industry stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
1. Technical Leadership & Team Management (25%)
1. Technically lead Applications Engineering for the OLT PON product line, including project planning and budget/schedule planning for NPAW
2. Lead and influence within your area of expertise while maintaining broad knowledge to effectively communicate issues to appropriate team members
3. Foster strong internal and external networks and work across multiple teams to achieve business objectives
4. Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with designers, engineers, marketing and sales personnel
5. Work closely with technical teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize silicon performance
2. NPI Project Execution (30%)
6. Personally perform NPI activities for the OLT PON combo, including PCB design, RF simulation, documentation, optics selection, and testing
7. Participate in silicon verification activities for NPI development process by performing hardware testing and performance optimization
8. Schematic capture and layout design for high-speed PCBs for optical communication ICs up to 10Gbps
9. S-parameter measurements of critical RF sections of the design
10. Lead the design, development, and implementation of HSPON next generation OLT combo products in applications
11. Lead application new product development activities
12. Coordinate and schedule Application designs/collateral and RDK releases to ensure project risk is managed effectively
13. Engage and lead key stakeholder groups during construction and delivery of solutions
3. Customer-Facing Activities (25%)
14. Design reference application kits to enable customer sampling and optimize performance of application prototypes to deliver "best-in-class" performance
15. Provide timely customer support and associated technical solutions to enable design-ins, in close association with field applications and sales teams
16. Perform fault finding, debugging and resolution of internal and customer issues in a timely fashion
17. Perform customer-facing activities including RDK generation, presentations, and customer visits
18. Support PLMs and represent Semtech to the outside world
19. Act as prime contact for internal/external stakeholder relationships, which may include regulators/standards committees
20. Develop deep understanding of organizational complexity to build strong rapport with internal stakeholders
21. Provide guidance and recommendations to develop business cases, balancing technical and commercial risks
4. Industry Standards & Market Development (10%)
22. Attend conferences and represent Semtech's technical capabilities
23. Stay abreast of industry technical and business trends through benchmarking and/or participation in professional associations
24. Develop Semtech's capability to win in the market in an ever more competitive landscape
25. Anticipate trends and respond by implementing appropriate changes
26. Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of products
5. Strategic Problem Solving & Analysis (10%)
27. Apply expertise and think creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and find solutions to multiple, interdependent, complex problems
28. Break down strategic problems and analyze data and information to provide insights and recommendations
29. Produce and maintain project documentation such as application notes and application kits
30. Handle broader work or accountabilities as assigned based on business needs
Minimum Qualifications:
31. BSc in Electronic Engineering or similar discipline, with related work experience.
32. Minimum 2 years of proven experience in the microelectronics (IC) or Optical Communications industry.
33. Good understanding or experience of designing/troubleshooting high speed printed circuit board (PCB) design.
34. The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a collaborative team environment.
35. Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot, perform root cause analysis, and deliver timely fixes.
36. Excellent communication skills and experience in similar customer support role.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experiences:
37. A higher degree in optical related engineering, Masters or PhD.
38. Experience in using Ansys HFSS 3D EM Simulation Software or equivalent.
39. Experience in the measurement and interpretation of S-parameters to achieve robust signal integrity.
40. The ability to support complex mixed signal products.
41. Experience of delivering technical documentation to a high standard.
42. Demonstrate initiative, technical aptitude and creativity, is results oriented and can flexibly manage time, priorities and multiple projects.
43. Experience of working/communicating with the Chinese market would be highly desirable.
