We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Assistant Engineer to join our Active Travel team in Edinburgh. This role can be worked flexibly, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times.
Our active travel team are recognised industry leaders and have developed a reputation of producing high quality outputs for our clients across all project stages. Our current portfolio of projects include both urban, city/town centre interventions and rural, linear route development schemes across Scotland and beyond. Some of our recent and ongoing projects include: Accessible Ayr, Kilmarnock Infinity Loop, Granton Waterfront Development and Dundee Sustainable Transport Corridors. We work for a range of clients including national government agencies, local authorities, private developers and community groups. We use the latest design software and techniques to produce innovative, sustainable and efficient design solutions for our clients with safety and sustainability at the forefront of our minds.
What does the role involve?
Working as an Assistant Engineer in our active travel team we'll offer you exposure to project work across all stages of design development/pre-construction, from inception through to detailed design as well as the potential for site supervision responsibilities during construction works.
1. You will undertake (engineering) design and development through the application of proven techniques and procedures to develop appropriate solutions to client problems including:
2. Preparation of feasibility studies to assess constraints, risks, opportunities and route and/or provision type options to identify an appropriate solution.
3. Undertaking elements of design from cycle track/path alignment, drainage, kerbing, footways and traffic signs and road markings.
4. Producing design outputs such as drawings, specifications, schedules, reports and calculations etc, to achieve the optimum solution for the project.
5. Working in close collaboration with your team and other design disciplines and have an appreciation of their role.
6. Ensuring deliverables are carried out within agreed timescales and budgets.
7. Ensuring that solutions meet client needs and expectations are met/exceeded.
8. Liaising with our clients and contractors and supervising works on site when required.
9. Ensuring that all work is carried out to the Company’s IMS, and current H&S legislation requirements.
10. You will take ownership and responsibility for the quality of work you produce and be fully committed to your professional development through a mix of our in-house training opportunities and engaging with professional institution activities.
11. You will work as part of a diverse and collaborative team to collectively identify and develop solutions to our clients problems.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess some or all of the following:
12. A degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering or equivalent, and be working towards achieving a relevant professional qualification.
13. Have knowledge, and experience, of the planning and delivery of active travel and sustainable transport projects or work packages on larger multi-disciplinary projects.
14. Experience of undertaking geometry design in accordance with Cycling by Design, and LTN 1/20 Cycle Infrastructure Design, using Civils 3D software.
15. An understanding of urban design principles and a holistic approach to linear infrastructure design with a focus on more sustainable transport modes and integrated design.
16. An understanding of highway regulations and guidance such as Manual for Streets, DMRB, TSRGD, MCHW and the Traffic Signs Manuals and how to apply these in practice.
17. Knowledge of drainage design including network assessment, SuDS design and liaison with relevant stakeholders.
18. Experience of AutoCAD and a sound understanding of its integration with the BIM environment.
19. Experience creating 3D visualisations to aid stakeholder engagement events is desirable but not essential.
20. The confidence to present design solutions and discuss progress both internally amongst design teams and externally to clients and stakeholders.
21. A desire to learn, progress and challenge yourself.
22. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
