Mechanical Design Manager - Ballymena
A well-established and reputable building services contractor is currently seeking a Mechanical Design Manager for its Ballymena head office. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced design professional to play a critical role in leading and coordinating Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health (MEP) design systems across a wide range of construction projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring MEP systems are designed, delivered and maintained efficiently, safely and cost-effectively, supporting overall project success from pre-construction through to handover. About the role:
1. Up to £75,000 + Bonus
2. Monday to Friday
3. Hybrid (4 days in the office, 1 day working from home)
4. Full-Time, Permanent
What you’ll be doing in this role:
5. Lead the design of MEP systems including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical systems, and mechanical controls to meet project goals and cost plans.
6. Manage the internal MEP design team, assigning tasks, setting deadlines, and ensuring timely delivery.
7. Collaborate with architects, engineers, consultants, and project managers to align design with programme milestones.
8. Coordinate external consultants and contractors, managing EWNs and NCNs effectively.
9. Document key design decisions to ensure traceability and clear communication with delivery teams.
10. Attend and lead technical workshops and coordination meetings with stakeholders.
11. Support the preparation and review of technical submittals, specifications, RFIs, and BIM models.
12. Oversee MEP design budgets and third-party contracts, reviewing fees and supplier quotes.
13. Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, BIM standards, BEPs, and regulatory requirements.
14. Provide technical support across pre-construction, delivery, and facilities management phases.
15. Contribute insights to bid preparation and early-stage engineering reviews.
16. Support continuous improvement by providing feedback on external design resources.
What you'll need for this role:
17. A minimum of 5 years' experience in a design-related role within the building services or construction industry.
18. Comprehensive understanding of MEP design across the full project lifecycle—from pre-construction through to final handover.
19. Experience managing internal design teams and collaborating with external stakeholders.
20. Strong working knowledge of technical systems, BIM modelling, and project coordination tools (e.g., Revit, Navisworks).
21. Effective communication, leadership, and project management skills.
22. Ability to take ownership of complex design projects while meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards.
