Paediatric Metabolic Nurse
Band 5/6 (Depending on experience)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5/6 paediatric nurse to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team for a fixed term contract/secondment.
The South West Regional Metabolic Department provides care for over 650 patients across the region.
Patients with metabolic disorders, require specialist tests for diagnosis and monitoring, need specialist therapies and often have multi-system involvement that require coordinated input from many clinical specialties. Many are at risk of becoming ill very quickly and need emergency management plans and alert systems in place so doctors are aware they need to be seen urgently.
The post holder will be part of a team who provides specialist nursing care, organising emergency alerts, coordinating packages of care, educating those involved in the care of these patients and supporting and educating families about avenues of support. The metabolic nurse is often the first point of contact for enquiries from patients, relatives and other professionals.
This is an excellent opportunity for a committed paediatric nurse with excellent verbal and written communication skills to work within a specialist team.

Main duties of the job
Main duties:
* Provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms for both inpatient and outpatient care including emergency alerts and illness management
* Develop, improve, and promote the service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care utilising the support and guidance of senior colleagues
* Develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team
* Develop the skills to act as a resource in the care of patient's needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers.
* Work closely with community, hospital, relevant network staff and organisations to ensure an effective seamless service.
* Provide effective communication systems of support for patients
* Provide education to professionals, patients and their families
* Build up a skill set to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice.
* Ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials
* Work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient.
* Support patient investigations and care including CNS led investigations and patient infusions e.g. enzyme replacement therapy
* Coordinate and plan patient assessments as per care plans and national monitoring e.g NICE managed access agreements
* Provide cross cover to the Paediatric Metabolic, Batten's and Barth Syndrome CNS service.
