What you will be doing
To support the once in a lifetime major infrastructure programme underway on our Raynesway site, you would be part of the multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for the continued design support and improvements to our legacy facilities.
For you, this means opportunities to shape the future of the Submarines business, through the design, commissioning and life-extension of critical nuclear facilities required to manufacture our key products. Given the complexity of the projects you'd be responsible for, this is a fantastic opportunity to work across multiple disciplines to understand the full design and through-life requirements of our unique facilities.
We are looking for a mechanical engineer to join our team and be responsible for the successful delivery of nuclear facility technical design and substantiation projects. You will be working across multiple disciplines and facility lifecycle stages (ie concept to disposal) to ensure that the areas under your responsibility meet both our engineering and project requirements. You will need to be able to interact with numerous stakeholders both internal and external to the business to be successful.
With this exciting opportunity you will get a chance to:
Be the lead engineer during all design stages, such as, but not limited to, identification of stakeholder requirements, optioneering, concept design, solution delivery planning, detailed design and definition, design substantiation, verification and validation planning, change management, installation, commissioning, and operational handover.
Ensure that the engineering solutions meet all project and technical (inc. safety & regulatory) requirements, including acting as an intelligent customer for activities carried out by suppliers.
Work on various manufacturing facilities within the Raynesway site and associated support equipment. Typical examples of project work include, but not limited to, process pipework, extract ductwork, chemical process plant and equipment, facility structures, gloveboxes, safety barriers, etc
Create and manage through-life substantiation of technical requirements for our nuclear facilities.
Use of a wide range of standard techniques to such as HAZOP, DFMEA, SIL, LOPA, etc.
Who we're looking for:
Bachelor's degree, Master's, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
Technical experience relevant to the facility design and system engineering discipline.
Experience using 3D modelling software such as NX and Invertor.
Experience of commissioning and installation of chemical process plants is desirable
Experience of handing a project over into operations and background in troubleshooting is desirable.
Membership of a relevant professional body or working towards.

The engineer shall exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and the ability to integrate cross-discipline engineering concepts, which include manufacturing engineering, service engineering, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, stress analysis (both static and dynamic), fracture and fatigue assessment, mechanical technology, cost engineering, product definition etc.
Qualities that we seek,
An ability to apply logical, analytical, and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems.
Experience as a design engineer operating across the product life cycle, undertaking design safety justification activities supporting manufacturing, integration, maintenance /refit activities and dealing with operational issues.
Experience of research and development, analytical and test verification activities.
To understand product system / sub-system requirements and derive component requirements at task level.
Good communication skill, to be to collaborate and communicate design solution information with task stakeholders.
To understand and apply the relevant standards and nuclear facilities engineering policies.
To check own and others design solutions and technical works for completeness and correctness.
To manage work in accordance with project cost, timescales, and quality targets.
To be a point of contact within the team to share subject matter knowledge across the function.
To encourage and support continuous improvements (of personnel, tools, processes, and methods).
To ensure project risks (technical, cost, and timescale) are identified and managed.
To define and deliver robust verification, Safety Justification, and qualification strategies and their outputs.
Ensuring the correct specification of hardware requirements, in line with the design and facility needs.
To lead the resolution and recovery from emergent issues.
To participate in Design support activities during production, build, maintenance and decommissioning of components.
To analysis, interpretation, and presentation of test results including comparison with analytical and/or empirical models.
