Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities:

* In accordance with the practice timetable, as agreed, the post-holder will make him/her-self available to undertake a variety of duties including rapid assessment, telephone & video consultations, face to face consultations and emergencies and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, patient test results, patient medical reports and examinations (e.g. Insurance Companies) on behalf of the Practice, referral letters NHS/private, paperwork and correspondence in a timely manner;
* Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation;
* Recording clear and contemporaneous I.T. based consultation notes to agreed standards;
* Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible);
* Prescribing in accordance with locally agreed or national guidelines.
* In general the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care

Job responsibilities

SALARIED GP

Reporting to: ThePractice Partners (Dr R Hartley. Dr M Li, NseSarah Hince and Dr N Milne).

Hours of work: Six sessions per weekplus equitable shares of home visits and on-call duties and cover partners onholiday.

Contract type: 12 month fixed term salaried GPposition

Role summary: The post-holderwill provide general medical services managing a caseload and deal with a widerange of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standardsof care for all registered and temporary patients

Location: Uppermill Health Centre, Smithy Lane, Uppermill, Oldham, OL3 6AH

Annual leave: Six weeks annual leave pluspublic/ bank holidays (FTE or prorata forany future P/T positions).

Study leave: One week per annum pro rata

Salary: dependent on experience

1.Main purpose of the role:

To support the GPpartners, to manage a busy and interesting clinical caseload. The appointeewill also have the opportunity to take part in leading on key disease areas(monitoring trends in treatment, staff training and prescribing) and assist in developingappropriate healthcare services, (practice-based commissioning, patientparticipation and health promotion. This is a PMS Training Practice).

2. Clinicalresponsibilities:

* Inaccordance with the practice timetable, as agreed, the post-holder willmake him/her-self available to undertake a variety of duties including rapidassessment, telephone & video consultations, face to face consultationsand emergencies and queries, visiting patients at home, checking andsigning repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, patient testresults, patient medical reports and examinations (e.g. InsuranceCompanies) on behalf of the Practice, referral letters NHS/private, paperworkand correspondence in a timely manner;

* Ingeneral the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normalduties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primarycare.

3. Other responsibilitieswith the Practice:

Assisting with training of doctors and nurses;

Awareness of and compliance with all relevantpractice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, dataprotection, health and safety, annual QOF Assessment of the Practice.

A commitment to life-long learning and audit toensure evidence-based best practice.

Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinicalstandard setting within the organisation;

Contributing to the development of computer-basedpatient records;

Attending training, Practice Meetings and eventsorganised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

Meet all tight timescales/deadlines for audits andwritten returns to ensure that the Practice meets quality standards andreceives the designated funding (e.g. Enhanced Services, QOF IIF, etc.)

4. Confidentiality

In the course ofseeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitiveinformation in relation to their health and other matters. They do so inconfidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacyand act appropriately;

In theperformance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder mayhave access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers,practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access toinformation relating to the practice as a business organisation. All suchinformation from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.

5. Health & Safety

The post-holderwill assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safetyand security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:

Using personal security systems within theworkplace according to practice guidelines;

Identifying the risks involved in work activitiesand undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks;

Making effective use of training to updateknowledge and skills;

Using appropriate infection control procedures,maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards;

In addition to maintaining continued educationthrough attendance at any courses and/or study days necessary to ensure thatprofessional development requirements are met, the post-holder will participatein any training programme implemented by the practice as part of thisemployment, such training to include:

* Participationin an annual individual performance review, annual GP Appraisal including taking responsibility for maintaininga record of own personal and/or professional development;
* Takingresponsibility for own development, learning and performance anddemonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similarwork.

9. Quality

The post-holder will strive to maintain qualitywithin the practice, and will:

* Alertother team members to issues of Clinical Governance issues, quality andrisk; participate in Significant Event Analysis reviews
* Assessown performance and take accountability for own actions, either directlyor under supervision;
* Contributeto the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activitiesand making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teamsperformance;
* Workeffectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients needs;
* Effectivelymanage own time, workload and resources. He/she will also contribute tothe overall team-working of the Practice putting the needs of the Practicefirst.

9. Communication

The post-holder should recognise the importance of effectivecommunication within the team and will strive to:

Communicateeffectively with patients and carers;

Recognisepeoples needs for alternative methods of communication and respondaccordingly.

10. Contribution to the planning and implementationof services

The post-holder will:

Apply practice policies, standards and guidance;

Discuss with other members of the team how thepolicies, standards and guidelines will affect own work;

Participate in audit where appropriate.

Work with the Partners and Management Team toachieve standards of quality, performance standards, budgets and targetswithout compromising levels of patient healthcare.

Contribute towards the development andimplementation of new standards, policies and procedures that are/will berequired of GP Practices now and in the future (as directed by NHS/ DoH/ SHA/PCT, new legislation etc.)


Person Specification


Qualifications

* A vocationally trained and accredited GP, preferably with MRCGP


Experience

* Current registration with the GMC and appropriate representation with a recognised medical defence organisation;
* A good knowledge of and interest in general practice and primary care.
* Initiative, creativity and motivation;
* A collegial team spirit and feel comfortable in a strongly multidisciplinary team environment;
* Able to take a consultative approach to their work, appropriately involving relevant people;
* An interest in a particular disease area and the willingness to take a leadership role in it;
* A good working knowledge and interest in national primary care strategies and ideas on how to implement these for the development of the Practice.
* Be able to put the needs of the Practice and Team ahead of individual needs at busy times, periods of increased workloads (QOF assessment, flu campaigns, sickness absences or unplanned leave etc.). Respond in a flexible way to fluctuations in workload.
* The Post-holder will be expected to demonstrate the ability to focus on long-term strategic goals rather than short-term issues/ details.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
* Ability to work as part if a multi-disciplinary team;
* Ability to work with limited supervision;
* Understanding of the pressures faced by GPs and healthcare teams;
* Willingness to contribute to and participate in a peer support group;
* Strong levels of IT proficiency and familiarity with primary care clinical systems (the Practice uses EMIS, Docman, TQuest and Accurx). Experience in using the Microsoft suite of programmes;
* Proven ability to handle a busy and varied primary care case load;
* Proven ability to offer support within a clinical team and share learning points in Practice meetings;
* Ability to draft cogent, error-free letters and reports in a timely manner;
* A good understanding of primary care contracting requirements, national and local schemes.
* Experience and an interest in a specific disease area
