Are you passionate about helping people manage their finances while supporting vital public services? North Lincolnshire Council is looking for a dedicated Debt Management Officer to join our Local Taxation and Benefits Shared Service team.
As a key member of the Debt Management team, you will play a crucial role in recovering and managing debts owed to the Council, including Council Tax, Business Rates, Benefit Overpayments, and Sundry Debts. You’ll work directly with customers to provide advice, negotiate payment arrangements and support financial inclusion.
What You’ll Be Doing
• Delivering a high-quality debt recovery service across North and North East Lincolnshire
• Supporting customers to maximise income and manage debt through tailored advice
• Attending Magistrate Court hearings and assisting Court Enforcement Officers
• Using IT systems to manage and recover debt efficiently
• Contributing to service improvement initiatives and continuous learning
• Making recommendations in cases of hardship and supporting write-off decisions
• Liaising with internal departments and external partners such as Citizens Advice, Department for Work and Pension and enforcement agencies
What We’re Looking For
• Experience in debt recovery, customer service, and working to deadlines
• Strong communication and negotiation skills
• Practical knowledge of Council Tax, NNDR, Benefits, and Sundry Debt legislation • Ability to manage sensitive and complex cases with empathy and professionalism
• Good standard of IT literacy (, Word, Excel) and data handling awareness
• A team player who supports colleagues and contributes to a positive working environment
• Good oral and written skills with GCSE's or equivalent at Grade 4 (C) or above in English and Maths
