Job Description: The Health Physics Group at UKAEA Culham provides routine advisory and monitoring services to site projects to assist in compliance with Health and Safety laws. Health Physics Technicians are required to maintain and reliably deliver a routine radiological protection and occupational hygiene service and to provide specialised monitoring support for a wide range of radiological and workplace hazards. They are also expected to provide operational Health Physics advice to engineers and plant technicians for radiological and beryllium related tasks at Culham (JET/MRF/MDF & MAST-U projects). The post holder must be designated as a radiation monitored worker under IRR17 and be a registered beryllium worker, which requires a medical examination. Additionally, they must be medically fit to wear pressurised suits and respiratory protective equipment.
Responsibilities and duties include:
1. Perform routine surface and airborne contamination monitoring for radiological and beryllium hazards.
2. Respond to urgent requests for Health Physics cover and advice during incidents such as spills, leaks, releases, or site emergencies.
3. Set up work areas with proper designation and ensure control measures are correctly applied following work permits and procedures.
4. Provide advice to ROs on setting up radiological and beryllium controlled areas.
5. Change and count stack discharge samples for alpha/beta/gamma/tritium and beryllium contamination.
6. Audit NDT radiography operations for compliance.
7. Prepare samples for counting, operate liquid scintillation counters, and assist in laboratory tasks.
8. Document transfers of materials from radiological and beryllium areas and produce reports on contamination monitoring.
9. Perform confined space atmospheric checks and occupational hygiene measurements for hazardous chemicals.
10. Advise on radioactive and beryllium waste disposal.
11. Provide cover for overtime, shifts, and on-call support as needed.
12. Assist in training new team members.
13. Respond to incident situations and act as a deputy for the HPS.
14. Participate in the emergency on-call team for on-site incidents and off-site RADSAFE responses.
15. Maintain flexibility and hands-on approach to routine services.
Qualifications Required: Minimum City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 1 or Level 2 Diploma in Radiation Protection or successful completion of Health Physics Apprentice Scheme.
Experience Required: City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 1 or above or L2 NVQ equivalent or above. Over 1 year of operational Health Physics experience is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft packages, good numeracy and literacy skills, strong interpersonal skills, and flexibility are essential. A full UK driving licence is advantageous.
