This post has neither Royal College or Postgraduate approval for training. The post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining experience in the management of critically ill Neurosurgical patients. Applicants must ensure they are aware of the implications to their career plans when applying for this post.
Clinical fellows will rotate between ward based duties as well as some operating theatre time and Neuro Critical Care duties. This necessitates close liaison and cooperative, flexible working with the other neuroscience junior staff and nurse practitioners. Your main role will be to consolidate the medical supervision and safety of care of the ward-based neurosurgical patients at Southmead Hospital.
The post-holder will be available to undertake teaching sessions for medical students and junior doctors as required, and cover a colleague’s clinical duties in order that they may deliver teaching sessions. The postholder will also be involved in audit, supervision of junior staff, research and administration as necessary.
Responsibilities include:
* Management of emergency and elective Neurosurgery patients on the ward within the multidisciplinary team
* Completion of administration such as discharge summaries, repatriation request forms
* Assistance in Neurosurgical theatres
* Supervision and teaching of nursing staff and junior SHOs
* Neurosurgery clinic attendance and assessment of ward attenders
Conditions of Appointment
* Must have full registration with the General Medical Council.
* Must have NHS experience.
* Some experience in neurosurgery, ITU or anaesthetics is desirable, but not essential.
* MRCS is desirable but not essential.
* Previous neurosurgery experience is desirable but not necessary.
* The passing of a medical examination is a condition of appointment of all practitioners within the scope of the National Health Service Superannuation Scheme.
